In NC machining of noncircular contours, where cutter is fed along a straight line intersecting perpendicularly the roration axis of work piece, the cutter path usually consists of Archimedes's spiral segments. From machining precision and efficiency point of view, a desired cutter path should be composed of the fewer segments as possible under the condition of satisfying the specified interpolation error limitation. In this paper, an optimal interpolation principle of Archimedes's spiral for planar curves is presented and then a practical algorithm is constructed. The segment number of the cutter path resulted from the algorithm not only is the fewest but also the interpolation accuracy agrees with the specified value. It is also evidenced that the profile error of machined contour corresponding to the cutter path is perfectly controlled within the desired value, i. e. the specified interpolation error value, through detailed analyses. The interpolation results of using the presented algorithm for machining disc cam profile are compared with those obtained by Nishioka's methods (3) . The comparison results sufficiently confirm the validity of the algorithm developed by the authors.

As a manufacturing technical education practice, the authors have tried to introduce the problem-based learning into the graduation study course for the last two years. This paper presents the progress and results. In the graduation study course, the students were encouraged to find out a useful theme that can resolve a practical problem and perform the research independently. The teachers provided some advices to help the students if necessary, through periodic discussions in an equal position. The students applied LEGO mind storms as a tool producing a mechatronics device to verify the idea, and furthermore improving the properties of the device through repeated prototypes until the development purpose was achieved. The authors aim at promoting the creative abilities of the students through such the course. From the opinions of the students who passed the course, it can be concluded that the students not only actively struggled but also found satisfactions in the courses. The result also illustrates that LEGO mind storms is an effective tool for the problem-based learning type of manufacturing technical education.

In this paper, a solution for the two-point boundary value variational problem, whose basic algorithm was published earlier by us, is formalized completely and universally. The optimum solution of the variational problem is obtained as a uniform B-spline curve by parallel and iterative computation. The degree of the B-spline used can be selected to correspond to the specified problem, and the solution is derived as a set of the control points of the B-spline. The algorithm is very simple and easily applicable to various engineering problems. As an application, trajectory planning of a manipulator with redundant degrees of freedom and a specified end effector path is selected, and the objective function which takes account of both the smoothness of the trajectories and the accuracy of the end effector path is constructed using the relative weighting coefficients. The effectiveness of the algorithm is well confirmed by the numerical examples.
