Despite the widely held view in school grammar that relative pronouns are omitted only when they are assigned the accusative case, there are instances in which they are omitted even when they are assigned the nominative case. The paper documents such examples collected from various sources and further discusses how (and whether) the omission of the nominative relative pronoun should be taught to English learners. Though we suggest how to get access to omitted elements, we will argue that fundamentally nothing new needs to be taught if English learners have knowledge of English grammar regarding the analysis of sentence structures, gaps relating to relative pronouns, usages of that and so on.
