AbstractEven considering Japan’s high literacy rates during the early modern period, it is rather unlikely, that the majority of the Japanese population would have been able to read and understand an important Buddhist text like the Heart Sutra, 般若心経. This naturally posed a problem for the monastic schools, who competed with the rather easy to practice Pure Land and Amida schools, and needed to become more accessible to their lay-supporters. An answer to this problem presented itself in the form of Hanjimono (判じ物), rebus-like allusions, using pictures to represent words or parts of words. Usually used for playfull riddles, artists would also use Hanjimono to represent their names and sometimes even short subversive slogans. It were monks from the Tohoku area who adopted Hanjimono to represent the Heart Sutra and thus helped to make it accessible to the illiterate lay people. The considerations behind that practice are topic of this paper.概要江戸時代に日本の高い識字率にもかかわらず、一般の日本人は般若心経の様な代表的な仏教の経文を読める事が不可能であっただろう。この問題を解決するために普段言葉遊びに使われた判じ物が利用される事になった。東北の寺で制作が始まった判じ物の絵般若心経は全国に広まった。この絵般若心経の意図するところを明らかにするのが、本論文のテーマである。

This paper addresses the variety of military service options in Korea.Military service is one of the obligations imposed on the men of Korea. Many people, especially in Japan, are thinking that all Korean men must go through a hard and painfulexperience. However, various alternative military services exist in Korea.Until now, there have been studies that analyzed active military service. However, studies that addressed alternative military service have been rare. Studies on active service have mainly conducted their analysis from the perspective of gender, and have viewed Korea as a military culture, analyzing the influence of the military experience in the formation thereof. However, previous research has not fully elucidated the diversity of military service experiences available. Therefore, this paper presents alternative services, and considers the diversity of military service basedupon interviews conducted to men who had finished the military service as industrial skill personnel. This paper reveals that a grasp on the diversity of military service experiences is necessary in order toanalyze the phenomenon of masculinities in Korea.

Previous studies show that there is some acceleration of adolescent girls' menarche. The current study, while confirming this, furthermore examines an acceleration of adolescent girls' height and weight. A new perspective of adolescent girls these days is discussed.

First, this paper examines existing literature and provides an overview of how international students with developmental and learning disabilities have garnered significant attention from researchers, as part of the increased interest in how diverse Japanese language learners can be. Subsequently, the kinds of difficulties faced by an international student with dyslexia in intermediate level Japanese reading classes at a Japanese university and the effectiveness of multi-sensory approach in overcoming these difficulties are examined. Finally, the reasons why this kind of support, which was unnecessary in beginner and earlyintermediate level classes, became imperative at an intermediate level are explored by examining the format, textbooks, and supplementary materials of the intermediate level class.

This article examines a mistranslation found in the passage of Matthew 6.17 in The Colloquial Japanese Version of the Bible (in Japanese, the title is "Seisho, Kogo-yaku"). In the original Greek version of the New Testament, the passage mentioned above uses the subject "you" in the singular form ("συ"). In The Colloquial Japanese Version however, the same passage uses the subject "you" in the plural form ("Anatagata"). As The Colloquial Japanese Version was supposed to be translated mainly from the English Version commonly known as the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, I believe this to be the root cause of the mistranslation. In other words, I think the mistranslation has to do with the differing uses of the subject "you" in Greek with that of English. In this article, I attempt to explain how and why such an elementary mistake took place. In hopes of avoiding these types of mistranslations in the future, I propose that there be a closer connection between the American Bible Society with the Japan Bible Society.

AbstractSome commonly used Japanese expressions exhibit what the author calls advertisement-like nuances. These expressions often leave an impression of exaggeration because they are used in such a way that they are expected to convey something more than their lexical meanings. These expressions have undergone a commercialization-process which gives them the functions of advertisement, exaggeration, and situation shift in the author’s terms. In this paper, the author attempts to describe the characteristics of these advertisement-like expressions through the analysis of the expression wadai, or “topic,” as they appear in the titles of magazine articles. For this purpose the magazine article database Web-OYA and the analysis tool KH Corder were used. The results of the analysis suggest that meanings resulting from commercialization are present in the use of the wadai- expression in the titles of magazine articles, although those new meanings are not necessarily expected to be added to the lexical meanings of the expression in the future.

The Chinese translators at Nagasaki received an order to study Manchu language from Tokugawa Shognate in the early 19th century. As a result, they edited two Manchu-Japanese dictionaries: Honyakumango sanhen and Shinbunkan wage , half a century later. This paper discusses mainly the following four points: first, why did it take about 50 years from being given the mandate to study Manchu language to editthese dictionaries? Second, what kind of the Chinese translators participated to edit them? Third, how did the Chinese translators plan to edit them? Finally, when did they edit Shinbunkan wage that were not obvious exactly?

AbstractDuring the mid-nineteenth century, Chinese translators in Nagasaki edited the Manchu-Japanese dictionary, Honyaku Mango Sanhen( 翻訳満語纂編). This dictionary presents each Manchu headword with a Chinese translation, and a definition rendered in both Manchu and Japanese. This paper discusses some mistranslations from Manchu to Japanese in the definition employed by the translators. Although there are individual differences, many mistranslations have arisen from a lack of understanding of the complex sentence structure, such as the relative clause and the coordinate clause in particular.

These expressions have undergone a commercialization process which gives them the functions of advertisement, exaggeration, and situation shift in the author’s terms. In this paper, the author pointed out that there was a characteristic modality form about ”desire” expressions by a first-person subject, used in the context of advertising and publicity. The usage of this form deviated from its general use, and, the analysis shows that a marketing strategy motivated this deviant usage.

Despite the widely held view in school grammar that relative pronouns are omitted only when they are assigned the accusative case, there are instances in which they are omitted even when they are assigned the nominative case. The paper documents such examples collected from various sources and further discusses how (and whether) the omission of the nominative relative pronoun should be taught to English learners. Though we suggest how to get access to omitted elements, we will argue that fundamentally nothing new needs to be taught if English learners have knowledge of English grammar regarding the analysis of sentence structures, gaps relating to relative pronouns, usages of that and so on.

This paper analyzes the Gospel of Matthew in description of Jesus genealogy as it identifies the distinction between two groups of Christians : Jewish Christian and Gentiles. Contrary to the genealogy commonly proposed by the Jews, Matthew includes four female gentiles in his genealogical description. In this paper, I examine among other things, why Matthew chose to include the gentiles in his genealogy.

Kazuo Ishiguro's latest novel The Buried Giant contains unfamiliar and familiar elements for the Ishiguro reader. The landscape is 6th century Britain where the shadow of King Arthur remains as do mythical creatures, prompting some to classify this book as fantasy. What is familiar is Ishiguro's focus on memory. Yet, the approach toward memory here is different. In previous books, the memories explored were those that belonged to an individual who was recalling them, sorting through them, and trying to make sense of the past. In this story, the memories have been forcefully removed from the characters, so their struggle becomes one of attempting to recall any basic fact of their past, rather than interpret them. This loss of the psychological dimension to memory makes the discussion of it less interesting than previous attempts. In addition, memories have been removed from the general population in an attempt to avert violent conflict. Again, because this has been done magically, it removes any interesting parallels to efforts in conflict resolution to address collective memory in the process of reconciliation. In the end, the story is compelling and memorable, but lacks depth.
