We are developing a user interface device for better health and creative thinking that allows movements of the waist while maintaining seating posture. Our interface encourages the user to use his/her body while operating a computer. We thought about the improvement of the body as a target of a new interface. Though our interface can be used even in the working environment to operate a computer, we valued the application to the game operation especially. To overcome the current limitations of the gaming interface, we designed a new interface device by focusing on the movement of the pelvis and the waist. We began by modeling the relation between the position of the pelvis and the center of gravity of the upper-body. Posture is calculated by using this model. Then, based on the model we developed a new interface system. We developed the Balance Ball1 as hardware to maintain the seating posture, while allowing the movement of pelvis and the center of gravity. The device also allows bouncing and tapping movements.
