With the start of the “Fifteen-Year War” against China by the outbreak of the Manchurian Incident on September 18, 1931, the press reports of the period came to be focussed on military operations in mainland China. The nation-wide hurly-burly in wartime, brought about by dramatic changes of the social situation, prepared a way to the establishment of war footing. In this atmosphere “Sensou Bidan” or “amazing stories of self-sacrificing warriors” were fabricated to “applaud their valiance.” Was it the State Power that forced the press to invent such tales? Or was it the press which prepared the path to this propagation? In order to see that the state power and the press went hand in hand in each stage of the war, I will take up “Nikudan Sanyushi” ( “In Praise of the Three Suicide-Bombing Heroes”) which marked the summit of the campaign.

“Ramen” is now different from Chinese noodles originated in mainland China and develop itself into a Japanese food with diversity. On the other hand, back in 1980s, Japanese Ramen had little diversity – basically on the premise of Chinese elaboration - than that of today. Then 1990s showed a gradual change on it when a concept of “Wa” (=Japanese spirit of harmony) was brought into Ramen with more recreational value of food and in that process, it became something emphasizes “Japanese tradition” instead of Chinese elaboration. Here we take a look at this “Ramen transition” in Japan from a viewpoint of both “Chuka” (=Chinese) and “Wa”images with time series analysis.

Macau overtook Las Vegas in sales of casinos in 2006. Up to the present day, many observers have attributed the remarkable success of the city to its open-door policy to capital investment from abroad. They assert that the revitalization and institutionalization of casino facilities effected by accepting foreign capital is the most important factor that has directly led to the success of Macau casino. By critically examining their views, this paper will concentrate on the structural changes of the Macau industry brought about by opening its doors to the outside world, and consider other factors that account for Macau' success.

In many places of Canton, China, barbecued pork, Char sui, is greatly favored, and is loved much more deeply than Siu mei, that baked pork, goose, or duck which has been popular and prevalent in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and other cities of Canton. In Japan, Cha shu, also barbecued pork that came from China, is a side dish like boiled or grilled pork and yet is now much different from the Chinese original. By surveying Chinese cuisine books published in Japan, this study examines how the original pork cooking has been rearranged to meet the needs of Japanese palate.

At the beginning of the year, Japanese people have an event to worship at shrines and temples called the “Hatumoude”. At the first visit, we give thanks for the year and pray for the safety and peace of the new year. One of the actions to be taken at the time of this first visit is the action of "throwing" money. This act is seen not only at the time of the first visit but also when asking God or Buddha to grant some wish.It can be inferred that the so-called offering is not compulsory and is one of the voluntary actions of each individual. Where does this motive come from? Why do people throw money in front of the money box?

This is servedas one of the Chinese cuisine very commonly, such as a Chinese restaurant in the street and a pub.Because of its convenience, it receives the impression that it is cook arranged in a Japanese style. Also, many home-cooked recipes exist that are arranged in a Japanese style, and have become popular ingeneral, and ”Yurinchi” are recognized as one of the Chinese cuisines for most Japanese. However, in the media, there are many discourses that are regarded as a cuisine originating in China. However, in China, which is said to be home-grown, it is almost impossible to see restaurants andrecipes for home-cooked dishes at all. Even asking the chef of Cantonese cuisine, only ambiguousanswers such as whether it is Taiwanese food rather than Cantonese cuisine can only be obtained. Alsoin books of household dishes published in Hong Kong and Taiwan, there is no descriptionabout ”Yurinchi”, and that description is not found in special cookbooks. However, naming and pronunciation are in Chinese. If so, when and where was the ”Yurinchi”, how wasit brought to Japan? Is it really a dish derived from China?

In recent media, amount of information related to food is remarkable. There is a flood of information about food on TV and the Internet 24 hours a day.Tabelog, a restaurant guide in Japan, occupies a central part of widespread information about food. Tabelog is a site that the general public attaches importance to when choosing a restaurant, and its ratings have strong influences on operating results and profits of restaurants. However, various problems such as ambiguity in the rating method and existence of fake ratings and buzz marketing - both aiming at intentionally improving evaluations - have been pointed out. The purposes of this study are to discuss the gourmet evaluation situation before and after Tabelog, to compare and discuss the positive and negative aspects, and to consider the future direction.
