Gas permeability of high polymer is important as a physical property in the gas barrier evaluation of vehicle tires and some fuel hoses from the viewpoint of energy-loss. The precise measurement of permeability rate of oxygen and steam is recently required in the field of organic EL display and fuel cell.This review describes the well-known mechanism of the gas permeability in the elastomers and the classification of gas transmission rate measuring methods as standard testing methods. The relationships between gas permeability and manufacturing process factors are also introduced. By using L18 orthogonal array, the results allow not only specifying effective factors and levels but also optimizing those for gas barrier property. Among the eight factors examined, primary factor of gas permeability is found to be the type of polymer, followed by the shape of inorganic filler, while the crosslink density of vulcanized rubber is not so influential.

The bicycle tire for the truck race has been improved to be much lighter than the tire of general bicycle. The bicycle tire for the race is used with a high pressure of 10 atm. Since the best speed of the truck race is 80km per hour, much contrivance has been conducted to the tire for the truck race. For example, NR (natural rubber) latex is used as a raw tube material, since the tear strength of NR is strong, in order to reduce the risk to burst. Therefore, there is small impact of the puncture, so the accident in which rider falls down from the bicycle is suppressed. For the adhesion of rim and tire, the rubber cement made by CR (chloroprene rubber) is used. The rubber cement has the work as cushion material of the stress which is added to the tire from various directions.

Destruction is a usual phenomenon in the trouble of rubber and plastic products, in particular fatigue fracture is frequently found in the case of vulcanized rubbers. Observation of fracture surface, that is fractography, is not reliable technique in the field of rubbers and plastics, even though it is well known method as the first step of accident analysis. Supporting evidence, such as results of surface analysis on the fracture and molecular weight measurement of damaged part, is necessary as well as the observation of fracture surface. There are some techniques against the fatigue fracture, for instance, increasing the radius of curvature of products and the amount of antioxidants.

In order to elucidate the degradation behavior of NBR caused by high concentration chlorine water, NBR samples corroded in 200ppm chlorine water and in pure water were analyzed by means of EPMA, FT-IR and XPS. The degradation process of the NBR corroded in high concentration chlorine water is considered as follows: (1) an α-H of the butadiene double bond in NBR molecule is subject to substitution by chlorine; (2) the chlorinated NBR abstracts an α-H in another NBR molecule to cause the elimination of HCl, which generates polymer radicals; (3) the polymer radicals thus produced add to polybutadiene double-bonds in the other NBR. It is concluded that residual chlorine reacts with NBR by chlorination and oxidation mechanisms and that these reactions lead to hardening and degradation of NBR through the increase in the crosslinking density.
