Butt-rot fungi and decay patterns were investigated on 118 Japanese larch trees (Larix leptolepis (SIEB. et ZUCC.) GORD.), 74〜75 years old, located at the foot of Mt.Yatsugatake, Nagano Pref. Phaeolus schweinitzii (FR.) PAT., Sprassis crispa (WULF.) FR., and an unidentified basidiomycetous fungus (frequencies of isolation : 41,12,and 9%, respectively) were isolated from the trees, but no decay fungi were isolated from 38% of them. The decayed parts in the trunks were 0.9〜23.5cm (average 9.5cm) in diameters at the bases of the trees and were 6.7〜450.0cm (average 115.1cm) above the ground. The diameters and heights differed with the different butt-rot fungi. There was a correlation between the heights of the decay and the volumes of the decayed portions.
