A paleontological restoration of the early diverging pinniped, enaliarctine gen. et sp. undet., which was described and identified by Kohno et al. (2021), was presented as a 3D model. The form was reconstructed based on MFM18009 (complete skull, distal half of the left mandible, the atlas, distal half of the left humerus, proximal half of the left ulna, the third metacarpus, thoracic vertebrae and ribs) and restored by the last author’s scientific comments.

A pinniped fossil was found at the construction site of the Togari-Tsukiyoshi City Road in Akeyo-cho, Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan in September 2020. We briefly report this new discovery of a partial skeletal bones belonging to a single individual (MFM18009), which was recovered from the lowermost part of the Yamanouchi Member of the Akeyo Formation, the Mizunami Group (lower Miocene: ca 18 Ma). MFM18009 is consisted from a complete skull, distal half of the left mandible, the atlas, distal half of the left humerus, proximal half of the left ulna, the third metacarpus, thoracic vertebrae and ribs. MFM18009 seems to belong in the Pteronarctos-Pacificotaria species complex of pinnipediforms, and is provisionally identified as Enaliarctine genus and species undetermined.

Additional strontium isotope ratio (87Sr/86Sr) of molluscs including Crenomytilus grayanus (Dunker), from the Akeyo Formation of the Mizunami Group in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, central Japan are determined. The strontium isotopic ages suggest that the Crenomytilus grayanus-bearing horizon (most-lower part of the Yamanouchi Member, Akeyo Formation) has been deposited at ca. 17.8 Ma. In addition, upper part of the Kubohara Facies (middle part of the Maki Member), Iwamura Group has been deposited at same age of the Yamanouchi Member.

More than 100 pteropod specimens were collected from each of the Eocene Shikiyama and Oniike formations in the Amakusa area, Kumamoto Prefecture, Southwest Japan. These fossils constitute the first Paleogene pteropod record from Japan. The pteropods from the Shikiyama Formation consist of five species, including Limacina canadaensis Hodgkinson, L. pygmaea (Lamarck), and Praehyalocylis annulata (Tate). The pteropods from the Oniike Formation consist of six species, including Limacina canadaensis, L. lotschi (Tembrock), Creseis hastata (Meyer), C. simplex (Meyer), and Praehyalocylis annulata. Both of these pteropod faunas are characterized by the predominance of Limacina in species diversity and specimen abundance. The faunas are similar to the pteropod faunas from the Middle to Upper Eocene of Europe and the east coast of North America in terms of generic composition and the predominance of Limacina.
