It's getting more important to transfer knowledge from elder experts to young engineers especially in shipbuilding industry in Japan. We developed knowledge transfer system based on UT-ESS (University of Tokyo Educational Software for Shipbuilding) and proposed a method to acquire knowledge of elder experts using the developed system. The system describes design process as workflows and design documents are associated with tasks in workflows. The association between design process and design documents is described by metadata based on semantic web technology. The proposed method is evaluated through a case study of knowledge acquisition in basic design department in four shipbuilding companies.

It's getting more important to transfer knowledge from elder experts to young engineers especially in shipbuilding industry in Japan. We proposed a method to support knowledge transfer and developed a system based on workflow concept. From the case study in our prior report, the method and the system were proved to be useful for knowledge acquisition in design department. At the same moment, several problems are found during the case study. To resolve these problems, a formal process description method using semantic web technology is introduced and developed. The newly proposed method for formal process description and the developed system are evaluated in experimental use for CAD operation.

Machinery maintenance activities should be based on statistics and knowledge of past machinery failures, but it is often difficult to keep gathering those data in engineers' daily works. This paper describes an approach to acquire those data and knowledge from machinery failure reports, which are written as free texts, by applying text mining techniques. The method consists of three stages. The first state is event extraction. The term event represents a status of an object ; "damage of a piston ring" is an example of it. Each machinery failure reports is converted into a set of events in this stage. The second stage is to find relations between the events. To find taxonomic relations, we defined a lexical distance and direction measure to evaluate similarities among events. To find non-taxonomical relations, an association rule mining method is used. The third stage is evaluating extracted relations. Authors tested the proposing knowledge acquisition process with 136 machinery failure reports and expert engineers validated more than 80% relations are correct knowledge.
