本研究は,ニュージーランドの中学・高校で使用されている日本語の教科書において日本のレジャー・レクリエーション活動やスポーツ行動がどのように扱われ,紹介されているかに注目した。各教科書のレジャー・スポーツの章に焦点を当て,語句や表現及び,文化紹介の項目を詳細に調べた。中学で使われている教科書においては,まず,「空手」「剣道」「柔道」「相撲」などの伝統的なスポーツの内容が紹介されていると共に,それらのスポーツが単語として基本表現の中で使われる傾向にある。また,日本で一般的に人気のあるスポーツとしては,「野球」が例に出されることが多く,「バレーボール」や「バスケットボール」がそれに続く。高校生用教科書では,中学で学習した日本の伝統的なレジャー・スポーツに加えて,現在の日本で一般大衆に人気のあるレジャー・レクリエーションとスポーツがより詳しく紹介されている。特に「野球」と「サッカー」が日本でとても人気のあるスポーツとして扱われている。この他,高校でさらに新しい単語として学習するものとして,「ジョギング」は公園などで手軽にできるスポーツであり,また「卓球」と「陸上競技」は学校のクラブ活動で人気のあるスポーツであるとしている。全般的に,どこに行っても広いスペースを持つ人口360万人のニュージーランドで行われるレジャー・レクリエーションやスポーツとは対照的な日本独特の風土を象徴したレジャーやスポーツが扱われているといえよう。This study firstly explored the Japanese language education system as to how the language and its culture are taught in secondary schools in New Zealand. It focused on leisure and sports among the cultural topics in Japanese syllabus. Secondly, it investigated how the Japanese leisure and sports are introduced in Japanese language textbooks widely used in secondary schools in New Zealand. Eight textbooks published between 1989 and 1995 with chapters dealing with leisure and sports were chosen. It was found that in junior level textbooks, sports such as KARATE, KENDO, JUDO and SUMO are introduced as traditional Japanese sports, while in senior level textbooks, focus is mainly on present popular sports such as baseball and soccer. At junior level, baseball is simply introduced as a popular sport in Japan while at senior level it is covered in more detail with the emphasis that the game is especially popular because of professional leagues and that people tend to spend their past time not only playing the game themselves, but also watching the professional games. Soccer is considered to be a sport which has been increasing in its popularity because ov the introduction of professional leagues in 1992. Other sports such as volleyball and basketball are introduced as popular sports especially among junior high school students taking them up as extracurricular sport activities at school. Table tennis and athletics are regarded as popular extracurricular sport activities at senior high school. At senior level, golf is also introduced as sport mainly among Japanese businessmen and housewives and it is described as the most expensive sport in Japan. It is expected that in future changes on Japanese peoples' values towards the sports and how they spend their past time will be introduced in the textbooks.
