Some recent surveys revealed that many Japanese have difficulty in developing self-affirmation skills, life skills, and the ability to think on their own, and to relate to others. These abilities and skills are at the very foundation of existence, and surveys seem to suggest the importance of early childhood education in the formation of self in children. In kindergartens, topics related to "life" and "living" frequently appear and these topics are often taken up in educational activities. Children learn how to live, after all, from the experiences they undergo, and this is particularly true for children at kindergarten age who are in the process of gaining independence and for whom everyday life itself is a learning experience. Teachers play a major role in building the kindergarten environment. In order for education goals to be achieved, it is crucial that the teachers understand and evaluate the individual and collective growth of children, and reflect and apply the learning to their everyday educational practices. In this study,we look into some studies and practices aimed at building a good environment for children from four perspectives. We hope that all adults involved with children during their growth period will learn that there are so many opportunities for education in everyday life and that they must take advantages of these opportunities to help develop the special personality in each child.
