Currently biologically interesting organic sulfur compounds are classified into seven categolies : naturally occurring bio-active compounds, antihypertensive ACE inhibitors, sulfonamides, psychotropic agents, antianginal agents, antiulcer agents and β -lactam antibiotics. The activities of the representative compounds in each part are commmented briefly from the standpoint of the interaction between sulfur and the animal body.

Recent advances in the field of the β-lactam ring syntheses are reviewed. All the methods are classified according to the notation of m±n_??_4 cyclization (m and n=0, 1, 2, 3, …), which is first proposed by the author. Each reaction is briefly commented.

Several problems encountered during the kg scale production of such an unstable carbapenem antibiotic “Panipenem” (CS-533) was overcome by scrutinizing the reaction conditions and the factors influencing the reactions. Each item was reviewed from the nostalgic standpoint of a basic organic chemist, and the hard work of isolation technology is described at the same time.
