A new method for the preparation of (Z)-4-alkylidenebutenolides is described. Coupling reaction of acetylenic stannanes with enol triflates of β-keto esters gave the corres ponding (Z)-2-alken-4-ynoates which were hydrolyzed and then subjected to cyclization in the presence of HgO to give moderate yields of (Z)-4-alkylidenebutenolides.

Recent studies on intramolecular epoxide cyclizations were reviewed. Regio- and stereoselective anionic cyclization of epoxy-nitriles, -olefins, -carbamates and -alcohols were discussed. Also regio- and stereoselective Lewis acid promoted epoxide cyclizations, radical and paradium-catalyzed ones were described.
In this study, effective chiral dopants possessing both rod-and arch-like control sites for the molecular arrangements were synthesized. In the nematic phases doped with these dopant compounds, their HTP values and generation of blue phases were investigated. As the result, the dopant showed very large HTPs, which indicated our methodology was suitable for generation of strong helicity. Further, the structure effect of the arch-site was investigated by the comparison of the homologues 1, 2 and 3.
