In the latter half of 2001, sapphire showing intense orange-pink hue came out in the jewellery market. It was expected that the colour was induced by the so-called "surface diffusion" at first because of its curious colour distribution. In order to make the origin of the colour, we have investigated morphology of sapphire using laser tomography and SEM, analysis of elements by EDRXF, SIMS, LA-ICP, XPS and so on, and confirmed that the sapphires contains Be diffused from external source such as chrysoberyl with heat treatment.
