Regrettably, Mineko Matsumura, a tanha poet and translator, is long for gotten. Her excellent translations into Japanese of Irish literature were once much praised by Kan Kikuchi and Ohgai Mori among others. This paper deals with her inner life in terms of the conflict between a realist and a fancier. The strife could encourage her to produce outstanding translations as well as many impressive tanka poems.

This article discusses and explores some reasons for the poor proficiency in English shown by Japanese learners which has drawn increasingly fierce criticism from every sector of society and for which school is said to blame to a large extent. A questionnaire was administered to 251 junior college and university students to discover their motivations for English learning. A content analysis of the responses revealed that most of them do not have a clear reason for wanting English fluency and a definite goal for which to study it. This indicates the difficulties college English teachers meet in class and it is suggested that we should define what degree and in what way formal education can and has to do to help foreign language learning.

Different cultures and languages often lead to different ways of organizing spoken and written discourse. That is why Japanese discourse developments do not meet expectations of native speakers of English and strike them as illogical or loosely organized. This paper surveys western and Japanese rhetoric in terms of their respective cultural backgrounds and underlying thoughts.
