This study is a part of the investigation and the analysis of the market places in Tokyo during the transitional periods in the modern urban history. The purpose of this study is to describe the relationship between the characteristics of site and the function of buildings. First, the investigation is focused on west gate of Shibuya station about how long the commerce and the offices on the first floor had stayed as they were. Secondly, superposed the distribution of those commerce and offices from 1958 to 2004 along with the lapse of time, and analyzed those distribution. Showing the characteristic of site on Shibuya that has changed remarkably after the war by Tokyu and Seibu department store is essential to consider urban cities in the modernizing Japan.
