In the latter part of Tokugawa era, kanten, a unique product in Japan, was made at the northern Settsu district, and was exported to China from Nagasaki. The aim of this article is to clarify characteristics of workers employed on the kanten industry in those days. At the same time, we try to understand the process of the development of that labour. We show the conclusion that labour of the kanten industry was in some ways typical of the birth of wage workers in Japanese capitalism in the Meiji period.
