Taiwan had many natural resources, espcially sugar, tea, coal and camphor. So the Great Powers started to enter in Taiwan in order to obtain the resources since the middle of 19th century. British anticipated other Great Powers in entering into Taiwan, and got some ports to trade. But, British came into conflict with China over camphor trade in Taiwan. Its comflict depended on difference of interpretation on clauses of Tien-tsin Treaty. British claimed China to stringly apply the clauses of Tien-tsin Treaty, because British, who have much benefited from free trade, intended to establish and enlarge free trade system in China. The political leaders or diplomats thought doing so will ensure the British prosperity in the future. In the other hand, Biritish point of view of Taiwan contained a certain segregative sense. Its sense came from the sense of empire. Therefore, the British policy on Taiwan, consisting of free trade and segregative sense to the mariginal, had features which were inherent in 19th British diplomatic and imperial policy.
