We discuss how Soseki was influenced by Chinese literature, at which he was excellent. His view point is from his work and thought. Although Soseki made a stay while studying in Britain and was influenced by Western civilization, he always continued to love Chinese literature rather than Japanese or Western literature. He was touched by not only Chinese literature, but also the thought of Chinese literature, i.e., the thought of Confucianism. Chinese literature places a great emphasis on politics and a sense of ethic and morality. The thought running through Soseki's work is the same as the one in Chinese literature. The thought which has pierced through Soseki's work is the same as Chinese literature thought. He quotes Chinese writings and Chinese poetry in his works. Soseki was a critic of Japanese civilization and society. His many works criticize the civilized society of Meiji and strongly are criticizing war. To criticize Meiji society is his important theme. Soseki also has a civilization criticism house in Japan. It is also a social criticism house. Chinese literature is the foundation of Soseki's spiritual creation. Furthermore, The reason why the Chinese readers easily feel an affinity with his work is that they can not only see the familiar expression of Chinese poetry and literature in his work, but also notice that his idea is the same as the thought of Confucianism, which runs through the Chinese literature by reading between thelines of his work. It can be said that the Chinese literature is the foundation of Soseki's spiritual creation.
