A 12-year-old, male miniature dachshund has an ulcer on the footpad of the right hind limb. Despite treatment for longer than 6 months, the ulcer did not heal. Biopsy of the lesion was done to make a definitive diagnosis. Histologically, there were lumens containing weakly eosinophilic fluid surrounded by tumor cells with a similar circular pale nucleus and distinct nucleoli that showed some variation in size. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3) and vimentin, were negative for S100 and p63. A poorly differentiated eccrine adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. Treatment was started with toceranib, an anti-angiogenic agent, and enlargement of the lesion was not observed during the administration period.

Post-import from the Republic of Indonesia to Japan in 2017, two juvenile, captive bred Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus) exhibited gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and hematemesis, and died. One of them was examined postmortem. Microscopically, the small intestinal mucosa was necrotic with crypts lined by regenerating large epithelial cells. A gastric cardiac mucosal ulcerative lesion containing fungal yeasts and pseudohyphae morphologically indicated Candida spp. The lymph nodes exhibited marked lymphoid depletion. Canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) was isolated from an oral swab, and virus protein 2 (VP2) gene sequencing revealed new CPV-2a. To our knowledge, this is the first new CPV-2a infection report in Asian small-clawed otters. This infection should be considered in gastrointestinal symptom-related cases in this species.

Little is known about the pathological roles of sebaceous glands in canine skin diseases, as most examinations have been conducted with cultured human sebaceous epithelial cell lines. To our knowledge, there is no available canine sebaceous epithelial cell line. The purpose of this study was to establish a canine sebaceous epithelial cell line and characterize it. An eyelid mass in a dog was surgically resected for treatment, and it was histologically diagnosed as sebaceous epithelioma. Collected tissue was conducted for culture, and the growing epithelial-like cells were passaged. The cells showed continuous proliferation for over 6 months. After 40 passages, the cells were named CMG-1. Lipid droplets in the cytoplasm of CMG-1 cells were confirmed by Oil Red O staining. As reported in studies with human sebaceous epithelial cell lines, lipogenesis in CMG-1 cells was promoted by linoleic acid, whereas TGF-β suppressed it. Additionally, real-time PCR revealed that the expression levels of chemokines and cytokines, including CCL-2, CCL-20, CXCL-10, TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-8, were significantly increased in CMG-1 cells following treatment with lipopolysaccharide. In conclusion, we successfully established a new canine sebaceous epithelial cell line. Our data indicated that lipogenesis and inflammatory responses were quantitatively evaluable in this cell line. CMG-1 cells could be useful for the pathological analysis of sebaceous gland diseases in dogs.

An 11-year-old male Miniature Dachshund was referred for acute neurological deficits in the pelvic limbs. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the spinal cord at the L1-2 intervertebral disc space was heterogeneously hyperintense in the sagittal plane and was mildly compressed from the ventral side by a small hypointense mass in the transverse plane. However, the lesion showed mass enhancement and severe spinal cord compression on post-contrast T1-weighted imaging. On three-dimensional myelography, a “golf tee sign” was observed around the mass. Therefore, we diagnosed an intradural extramedullary lesion. The mass was surgically removed and histologically diagnosed as a hemangiosarcoma. The “golf tee sign” observed on magnetic resonance myelography may be useful for distinguishing intradural extramedullary masses from intramedullary masses.

Hepatobiliary diseases of animals are frequently diagnosed by a combination of imaging, clinical pathology, and histopathology. A standardized surgical liver biopsy protocol, however, has not been established in veterinary medicine with regard to the selection of lobe and site of the liver to yield the most diagnostic information. To address this matter, we histologically examined 33 livers of autopsied dogs from which tissue samples of 4 different lobes as well as 4 different sites of each lobe were prepared. We measured the hepatic lobular diameter (HLD) as an objective variable to refer to the inter-lobar or inter-site difference among the biopsied samples. A measurement of 2,623 hepatic lobules resulted in 1.042 mm as the average of all the HLD values. Statistical analysis further revealed that the HLD tended to be small in a superficial 2 mm area of the liver parenchyma regardless of biopsy location, thus this area should be evaluated carefully by pathologists. The results also suggest that the HLD values of the quadrate lobe may measure smaller than those in the other lobes. Therefore, one would be able to obtain representative data of the entire liver by taking a sample from any single lobe except for the quadrate lobe. HLD measurements are needed in order to accumulate potentially useful information on the microanatomy and pathophysiology of the liver.

Localized scleroderma (LS) is a sclerotic skin disorder rarely reported in the veterinary literature. We herein report the first case of a linear LS-like skin lesion in a cat. A 1-year-old castrated male Himalayan cat was presented with a 1-month history of an alopecic, indurated, serpiginous, branched skin lesion on the dorsal cervical to scapular area. The cat had no history of trauma, although a topical spot-on endectocide had been applied near the lesion. Histopathological examination revealed a focal area of hyperplastic dermal collagen with the absence of pilosebaceous units. The cutaneous lesion remained unchanged during a 2-year follow-up period. Clinical and histopathological similarities of this skin lesion with those of the linear form of LS in humans were considered.
