[Purpose] This study examined the influence of range of motion of the ankle joints on elderly people’s balance ability. [Methods] We conducted a four-week experiment using 60 out of the 89 elderly people who used B senior health facility, as subjects. TETRAX stability, synchronization were conducted to measure balance ability. We examined correlations between TETRAX balance and ankle joint ROM. Student’s t-test and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for the statistical analyses. [Results] There were significant correlations between measurement items of TETRAX stability and synchronization and movement of the ankle joint. [Conclusion] It was found that as had plate was stable in measurement using ankle joint ROM and TETRAX after closing eyes, balance was maintained with Dorsi Flexion.

[Purpose] This study aimed to investigate the effects of the therapeutic device combined with LED and microcurrent (MC) on muscle tone and stiffness in the calf muscle after its application during moderate aerobic exercise. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty healthy adult subjects were randomized to either the test group of the therapeutic device combined with LED and MC or the control group, and they walked on a 10%-sloped treadmill with a 5 km/hr speed for 30 minutes. Each of the subjects in the test group performed treadmill exercise with the therapeutic device attached to the edge of his or her calf muscle. After the exercise, the muscle tone and stiffness at the edge of the calf muscle were measured. [Results] With respect to the muscle tone, a statistically significant difference was found between the two groups only 5 minutes after the exercise. Concerning muscle stiffness, significant differences were shown between the two groups right after the exercise and 5 minutes after the exercise. [Conclusion] Integrated treatment with LED and MC on is considered helpful for lowering the muscle tone 5 minutes after the exercise, and for lowering the muscle stiffness right after the exercise and 5 minutes after the exercise.

[Purpose] This study examined the effect of the distance between the two electrodes on delayed onset muscle soreness during microcurrent therapy. [Methods] In this study 24 healthy women who hadn’t exercised regularly for six months were selected and randomly divided into two groups. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) was induced and experimental Group 1 were given microcurrent treatment with the electrodes attached at a close distance evaluated. Experimental Group 2 received the same treatment with the electrodes attached at a greater distance apart. Visual analogue scale pain and the RIII reflex were evaluated after inducing DOMS and after one day, two days, three days and four days of microcurrent treatment. [Results] The visual analogue scale and amplitude of RIII amplitude only showed significant differences with the length of time of the treatment. [Conclusion] This study found that difference of interelectrode distance has no influence on VAS pain and the RIII reflex of DOMS. Although there were no significant differences in RIII amplitude, we suspect that it may be influenced by current parameters such as frequency and intensity.

Background: The prognostic implications and surgical benefit of isolated significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and prognostic factors in patients with TR were investigated. Methods and Results: In 870 consecutive patients with significant isolated TR, all-cause mortality was analyzed over 4.9±2.9 years. It was found that the survival rate tended to be higher in the 57 patients who underwent tricuspid valve (TV) surgery than the 813 patients who did not by using propensity-score matching (P=0.068), although it was not significant. Of the 813 patients that did not undergo TV surgery, the 5-year survival rate was 74%. According to the Cox proportional hazards model, the initial TR jet area (hazard ratio [HR], 1.044; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.016-1.073), pulmonary artery systolic pressure (HR, 1.024; 95%CI, 1.017-1.032) and presence of right ventricular (RV) dysfunction (HR, 2.256; 95% CI, 1.329-3.828) were predictors of mortality independent of patient age and presence of diabetes mellitus and renal failure in medically managed patients. Conclusions: In patients with isolated significant TR, there was a tendency, although not significant, towards a higher survival rate after TV surgery. The severity of TR and pulmonary hypertension, and the presence of RV dysfunction are independent prognostic factors in medically managed patients. Further prospective randomized studies are necessary to demonstrate the benefit of TV surgery in these poor prognostic populations. (Circ J 2010; 74: 375-380)

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of galvanic vestibular stimulation on event-related potentials. [Subjects and Methods] Forty normal female adult subjects were randomly distributed to a galvanic vestibular stimulation application group (20 subjects) and sham group (20 subjects). For galvanic vestibular stimulation application, a positive electrode was applied to the right mastoid process, and a negative electrode was applied to the left mastoid process; simulation was applied for 10 minutes. A test was conducted on the N100 and P300 components of the event-related potentials before and after galvanic vestibular stimulation. [Results] The N100 latency showed statistically significant differences in interaction effects between time and group in the F3, F4, Fz, and Pz areas. The P300 latency showed the same results in the Fp1 and Fp2 areas, the N100 amplitude showed the same results in the Fp2, Fz, and Pz areas; and the P300 amplitude showed the same results in the Pz area. [Conclusion] These results suggest that galvanic vestibular stimulation may play a positive role in the N100 and P300 components of the event-related potentials of the cerebral cortex related to decision-making in matching words with images.
