Purpose: To review the current clinical studies regarding the accuracy of implant computer-guided surgery in partially edentulous patients and investigate potential influencing factors.Study selection: Electronic searches on the PubMed and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases, and subsequent manual searches were performed. Two reviewers selected the studies following our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Qualitative review and meta-analysis of the implant placement accuracy were performed to analyze potential influencing factors. Angular deviation, coronal deviation, apical deviation, and depth deviation were evaluated as the accuracy outcomes. Results: Eighteen studies were included in this systematic review, including six randomized controlled trials, nine prospective studies, and three retrospective clinical studies. A total of 1317 implants placed in 642 partially edentulous patients were reviewed. Eight studies were evaluated using meta-analysis. Fully guided surgery showed statistically higher accuracy in angular (P <0.001), coronal (P <0.001), and apical deviation (P <0.05) compared with pilot-drill guided surgery. A statistically significant difference (P <0.001) was also observed in coronal deviation between the bounded edentulous (BES) and distal extension spaces (DES). A significantly lower angular deviation (P <0.001) was found in implants placed using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) compared to the conventional surgical guides. Conclusion: The edentulous space type, surgical guide manufacturing procedure, and guided surgery protocol can influence the accuracy of computer-guided surgery in partially edentulous patients. Higher accuracy was found when the implants were placed in BES, with CAD/CAM manufactured surgical guides, using a fully guided surgery protocol.

Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for chronic pain, and it is generally regarded as an appropriate intervention. However, it may not be effective for some pain sites, and the duration of the effect may be limited. In addition, some studies of CBT lacked a comparison group. This review summarizes evidence for the effectiveness of CBT for orofacial pain and assists in the development of guidelines for orofacial pain management. A literature search in PubMed was performed for studies published from April 1990 through March 2020. The search keywords were “burning mouth syndrome,” “temporomandibular disorders,” “myofascial pain syndrome,”“chronic orofacial pain conditions,” “cognitive behavioral therapy,” and “non-pharmacological therapy.” The results indicate that CBT alone or in combination with other treatments, such as intraoral appliance, stress management, or biofeedback, is effective for the vast majority of orofacial pain cases. Therefore, dentists should consider using CBT to manage orofacial pain in their patients.

Recent studies suggest that histamine—a regulator of the microcirculation—may play important roles in exercise. We have shown that the histamine-forming enzyme histidine decarboxylase (HDC) is induced in skeletal muscles by prolonged muscular work (PMW). However, histological analysis of such HDC induction is lacking due to appropriate anti-HDC antibodies being unavailable. We also showed that the inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α can induce HDC, and that PMW increases both IL-1α and IL-1β in skeletal muscles. Here, we examined the effects (a) of PMW on the histological evidence of HDC induction and (b) of IL-1β and TNF-α on HDC activity in skeletal muscles. By immunostaining using a recently introduced commercial polyclonal anti-HDC antibody, we found that cells in the endomysium and around blood vessels, and also some muscle fibers themselves, became HDC-positive after PMW. After PMW, TNF-α, but not IL-1α or IL-1β, was detected in the blood serum. The minimum intravenous dose of IL-1β that would induce HDC activity was about 1/10 that of TNF-α, while in combination they synergistically augmented HDC activity. These results suggest that PMW induces HDC in skeletal muscles, including cells in the endomysium and around blood vessels, and also some muscle fibers themselves, and that IL-1β and TNF-α may cooperatively mediate this induction.
