Nowadays the need for education to enhance moral sense has increased, and it affects theschool curriculum in Japan. In fact moral education will be fully implemented as an officialsubject in elementary schools in 2018 and also in junior high schools in 2019. In this time, it isan impotant agenda for schools and teachers to improve the quality of the moral lessons. In this article, we first clarify the reasons why moral education will become an officalsubject and reaffirm the intention for this change. Then,we investigate teachers’ reaction onthis change by providing questionairs. In order to improve the quality of the moral lessons,we give students opportunities to think about and discuss issues on their own by devising aquestion, “What would you do?”, based on self involvement to the characters in the story, andexamine its effectiveness through the lessons at elementary and junior high school. Then, weconsider the possibilty for the change to the future moral lessons where students think anddiscuss.
