As known well, the expander cycle is advantageous in performance and reliability, but some limitations come from increasing chamber pressure and/or thrust. They are dominated inherently by the thermal energy absorbed by the regenerative coolant to drive the turbopump. In order to improve this problem to some extent, we have proposed the advanced concept thrust chamber in which an additional heat exchanger was installed to extract the larger amount of thermal energy from combustion (ref. 1). We have applied this concept for the LOX/LH2 high pressure expander cycle engine that is designated as HIPEX engine. Preliminary tests using a sub-scale engine made it clear that the combustion performance was not affected by installation of a heat exchanger within a combustion chamber, and the heat flux averaged over heat exchanger became approximately 70 percent of the value evaluated by Bartz’s correlation. In addition, wide thrust throttling (down to 23 percent of rated value) and restart capabilities were also verified. These test results revealed that the HIPEX engine delivering 140 kN of thrust at 10 MPa of chamber pressure is feasible. This paper describes the features of the HIPEX engine and the preliminary tests using the sub-scale engine.

Peptides of the ENF (Glu-Asn-Phe) family, which occur in the hemolymph of Lepidoptera, were reported to act on the plasmatocytes and heart, cause body paralysis, and inhibit body growth. In this paper we report on yet another, most surprising effect. An ENF peptide isolated from the wild silkmoth, Antheraea yamamai, and named Antya-ParP causes paralysis in the caterpillars but not in the pupae of Bombyx mori. However, adults that emerge from the treated pupae lay diapausing eggs. The embryonic diapause of B. mori is normally induced by the diapause hormone (Bommo-DH), which is produced in pupae from the suboesophageal ganglion. The effect of Antya-ParP is independent of this ganglion, showing that the Antya-ParP action is not mediated by Bommo-DH. The sequence of 23 amino acid residues of Antya-ParP shows no similarity to the Bommo-DH sequence of 24 residues. The mode of action of the two peptides seems to be identical but the threshold concentration of Bommo-DH is up to hundred times lower than that of Antya-ParP.

Buruli ulcer (BU) is an emerging human disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, which mainly affects the extremities. It is most endemic in sub-Saharan Africa; however, it has been reported worldwide, including in some non-tropical areas. “M. ulcerans subsp. shinshuense” is proposed as a subspecies of M. ulcerans, which have been reported from Japan and China. A total of 35 BU cases have been reported as of November 2012. Although M. ulcerans is categorized as nontuberculous mycobacteria, it has some unique characteristics that could only be observed in this bacterium. It possesses a giant virulent plasmid, composed of 174-kbp nucleotides, coding polyketide synthase to produce macrolide toxin called mycolactone. The discovery of such a linkage of plasmid and its pathogenesis has not been reported in other human disease-causing mycobacteria.
