Many studies have been conducted on nostalgia outside Japan, whereas only a few studies have been conducted in Japan. This study proposed that by explaining nostalgia with the concept of "natsukashisa with sentimentality", results of previous studies on functional features of nostalgia in English-speaking countries would be replicated, and we conducted two studies. Studies 1 and 2 compared functional features of "natsukashisa with sentimentality", including increased authenticity, respectively under normal conditions or threat to the self. Both of two studies were conducted on undergraduate students, 82 students participated in study 1, and 45 students participated in study 2. These studies supported our hypothesis. Finally, future perspectives on studies of nostalgia in Japan were discussed.
