Magnetic fields can represent a health problem, especially low frequency electromagnetic fields sometimes induced by electric current in metallic objects worn or used in or on the body (as opposed to high frequency electromagnetic fields that produce heat). Electric toothbrushes are widely used because of their convenience, but the electric motors that power them may produce electromagnetic waves. In this study, we showed that electric toothbrushes generate low frequency (1-2000 Hz) magnetic fields and induce electric current in dental appliances (e. g. orthodontic and prosthetic appliances and dental implants). Current induced by electric toothbrushes might be dependent on the quantity and types of metals used, and the shape of the appliances. Furthermore, these induced currents in dental appliances could impact upon human oral health, producing pain and discomfort.

Coronavirus disease pandemic has led to a shortage of disinfectant alcohol (DA; 76.9–81.4% ethanol solution) in Japan. This study investigated the availability of hypochlorous acid (HA) as an alternative disinfectant to DA in clinical environment. HA is a safe and economical disinfectant with a broad antibacterial spectrum and low risk of hand irritation, which is used worldwide. In this study, HA and sodium hypochlorite solution (SH) were degraded over time and the degradation was accelerated by temperature and lighting. Results of bactericidal effects of HA revealed that the realistic effective concentration should be 200 ppm. Compared with DA, the dental carbon steel burs were more severely rusted by SH and HA. These results indicated that high concentration of HA generated on-site could be an effective and safe disinfectant for use immediately after generation with consideration of object materials in clinical environment, as an alternative to DA.

induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS細胞) は, 2007年に山中らにより初めて樹立されて以来, 技術の普及と共に様々な研究が進み, 医薬品開発においては, ヒト由来iPS細胞を用いた医薬品の安全性評価や, 患者由来iPS細胞を用いた病態解析や治療薬の探索・開発への応用が期待され, またiPS細胞を利用した再生医療等製品については, 治験がはじめられたものもあるなど, 実用化に向けた取組みが進められている. 一方で, iPS細胞の利用にあたっては, iPS細胞の特徴を背景として, 特別に留意すべきポイントが存在するため, 独立行政法人 医薬品医療機器総合機構として, iPS細胞の利用の公表情報や医薬品開発へのiPS細胞の利用およびiPS細胞を利用した再生医療等製品の相談における経験も踏まえ, 現時点におけるiPS細胞の創薬および再生医療への利用についての留意点等を取り纏めた. 本稿ではその内容を紹介し, 更なる医薬品開発促進の一助としたい.
