An extractive fermentation for ethanol production was carried out by using immobilized cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Kyokai 7 and its lactose-fermentable fusant (strain PN13). Although o-isopropylphenol (OIPP) and o-tert-butylphenol (OTBP) as extractive solvents had relatively large partition coefficients against ethanol (1.4 by weight-based concentration), the solvents were heavily toxic to both yeasts. Some plant oils such as castor oil protected the yeasts from the toxicity of OTBP. Therefore, the ethanol fermentation became feasible even in the presence of OTBP as extractant by using yeast immobilized within alginate gel containing castor oil as protective agent. The ethanol production activity of gel beads containing the oil was not deteriorated through six repeated uses.

Fish muscle protein films were prepared from blue marlin (Makaira mazara Jordan & Evermann) meat which had been stored at 30°C to intentionally lower the meat quality. In this study, the effects of meat quality and pH on the formation of these protein films were investigated. Moreover, ε-polylysine was added to the film-forming solutions to reduce the microbial population of films. The mechanical properties of the films were slightly affected by acidic and alkaline pHs. However, the water vapor permeability of muscle protein films was not affected by either the quality of the fish meat or the pH of the film-forming solutions. SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulfate- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) showed the degradation of myosin heavy chain in acidic films and polymerization in alkaline films. It was revealed that biodegradable films can be produced even from very low quality fish meat, and that the bacterial population of films could be drastically reduced by the addition of ε-polylysine.

Interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) is one of the type I interferon-inducible proteins. Addition of ISG15 known as ISGylation is an ubiquitin-like posttranslational modification. Coexpression of ISG15 and ubiquitin-activating enzyme E1-like protein (UBE1L) is required to induce ISGylation. Previously, we identified feline ISG15 gene and found that the capsid protein of feline immunodeficiency virus was ISGylated in vitro by treatment with feline interferon-ω. In this study, we cloned feline UBE1L (FeUBE1L) gene to further study the mechanism of the antiviral activities induced by ISGylation. Sequencing analysis revealed that active sites of FeUBE1L were highly conserved. These data suggest that FeUBE1L has an enzymatic activity. Further, expression of FeUBE1L was induced in feline cell lines by treatment with feline interferon-ω and ovine interferon-τ.
