Oxide ion conductivity in defect perovskite, mainly Pr2NiO4 with K2NiF4 structure, was studied in details. Defect perovskite oxide consists of perovskite block connected series to oxygen deficient block and although it is known that oxygen deficient block traps mobile oxide ion in lattice, interstitial oxygen introduced at rock salt block in Pr2NiO4 shows high mobility resulting in the high oxide ion conductivity. Oxide ion conductivity is much increased by doping Cu and Ga for Ni site and Pr deficient. The observed oxide ion conductivity was high like log (σ/Scm−1) = −0.25 at 1173 K. Conducting property of Pr1.91Ni0.75Cu0.21Ga0.05O4(PNCG)/Ce0.8Sm0.2O2(SDC) nano laminated film was further studied and the conductivity was much increased by formation of residual strain and the ion blocking method shows the transport number of the laminated film is almost unity and so high conductivity of PNCG/SDC laminated film could be assigned to pure oxide ion. Application of PNCG for anode of SOFC was further studied and it was found that surface activity of Pr2NiO4 doped with Cu and Ni shows high and so superior cathodic property was achieved at low temperature by mixing Pr2NiO4 with SDC. The maximum power density of the cell using LaGaO3 thin film electrolyte was achieved at 0.12 W/cm2 at 673 K.

Preparation of Microtubular cell using doped lanthanum gallate (LSGM) electrolyte with a dip coating and co-sintering process was studied. In order to suppress Ni diffusion from Ni-based anode substrate to LSGM electrolyte layer, Ti added La-doped ceria (Ti-LDC) was inserted as buffer layer. The amount of Ni diffused in LSGM electrolyte was investigated by EDX analysis as a function of sintering temperatures. It was found that sintering at 1350°C is suitable from the sintering density and the Ni diffusion. The cell sintered at 1350°C exhibited the higher power density than that of the conventional LSGM micro-tubular cell, even though a small amount of Ni diffusion was still observed at the Ti-LDC buffer layer/LSGM electrolyte interface. The micro-tubular cell with around 50 µm thickness showed the open circuit potential higher than 1.0 V and the maximum power density of 0.69, 0.31 and 0.12 W/cm2 at 700, 600 and 500°C, respectively, were achieved.

Solid oxide electrolysis cell for electrolysis of CO2 to CO was studied with the cell using LaGaO3-based electrolyte at the intermediate temperature (i.e. 973–1173 K). Various metal additives to Ni were examined for cathode to CO2 reduction and it was fund that Ni added with Fe shows high activity and the current density of 1.5 A/cm2 was achieved at 1.6 V and 1073 K on Ni–Fe (9:1) cathode. Improved electrolysis activity was explained by the expanded reaction site which may be assigned the fine particle of Ni. Furthermore, effects of additives to Ni cathode were studied and it was found that the electrolysis current could be much improved by addition of Fe to Ni. Effects of oxide ion conductor mixing with Ni–Fe were further studied and it was found that mixing La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.9Mn0.1O3 with Ni–Fe bimetal is the most effective for achieving high electrolysis current of CO2 of 2.07 A/cm2 at 1.6 V and 1073 K.
