19世紀半ばに、アイヌ集落に天然痘が流行し多くのアイヌの人々が亡くなった。その状況を憂えた箱館奉行の村垣範正は、江戸幕府に医師派遣を要請した。医師の桑田立斎が選ばれ、江戸を出発してから1カ月で箱館に到着、1857年に世界で初めての集団強制種痘をアイヌ6,000余人に実施した。その顛末を商人の杉浦嘉七がアイヌ風俗画家・平澤屏山に描かせ、村垣家に献上した。立斎は1859年に原本をもとに模写を作らせて家蔵本とし、さらにこの模写本をもとに1941年に林司馬が模写をした2点が作られたが、肝心の原本の所在が長く不明であった。この絵は日本の医学史上、行政支配上記念すべき記録画とされているが、当館所蔵の平澤屏山筆「種痘施行図」が1857年に描かれた当初の原本と考える。 The Ainu people suffered from smallpox in the mid-nineteenth century. Muragaki Norimasa of the Hakodate magistrate`s office called on the government in Edo to send a doctor. Dr. Kuwata Ryusai went to Hakodate and compelled 6,000 Ainu people in allto be vaccinated. A merchant. Sugiura Kashichi had Hirasawa Byozan paint the scene and presented the picture to Muragaki Norimasa. Dr. Kuwata made a copy from the original painting by Hirasawa Byozan for his family in 1859. In 1941, a descendant had two copies painted by Hayashi Shime. This scroll is an important painting from the point of view of medical history and the administrative control.The original picture's where about had long been unknown. I believe that the scroll owened by Tohoku Fukushi University Serizawa Keisuke Art and Craft Museum may be the original.
