Here we compare D. Graeber’s Debt(Greaber 2014) and M. Aglietta et A. Orléan’s ed. La monnaie souveraine (Aglietta et Orléan 1998), particularly from the perspective of money theory. First, we extract and summarize money theory in Debt, then we look at the central content of La monnaie souveraine after giving an overview of the claims of Aglietta et Orléan’s La violence de la monnaie. Then, Graeber’s criticism of the “primordial debt” theory is examined while confirming the concrete content of La monnaie souveraine. Based on the above, the direction of money theory centered on credit money suggested by both discussions will be sketched.
