Ludwigia grandiflora (Michx.) Greuter & Burdet is an invasive aquatic plant native to an area ranging from the southeastern United States to South America. In previous reports, L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa has been identified as L. grandiflora subsp. grandiflora, a hexaploid subspecies (2n = 48) or L. grandiflora sensu lato. Species of Ludwigia sect. Jussiaea, are morphologically very similar. Morphological characters, especially floral characters and cytology (chromosome number) have been used to identify species and subspecies. In our study, the morphological characteristics of L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa substantially corresponded to those of L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala (Hook. & Arn.) G. L. Nesom & Kartesz, a decaploid (2n = 80) subspecies. The chromosome number of L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa was 2n = ca. 80, the same as in L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala (2n = 80). Importantly, L. grandiflora in Lake Biwa is not L. grandiflora subsp. grandiflora, but rather L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala. This re-identification has implications for management in Lake Biwa, since the life history of L. grandiflora subsp. hexapetala has been studied in Europe.

DNA analysis and morphological observation were conducted for a putative Potamogeton hybrid endemic to the Fuji Five Lakes and Lake Ashi and Potamogeton × leptocephalus from Lake Biwa, Japan. Both proved to be hybrids between P. maackianus and P. perfoliatus. However, the hybrid from the Fuji Five Lakes and Lake Ashi was distinct from P. × leptocephalus in certain morphological characteristics. It is described as a new variety P. × leptocephalus var. fujiensis.

Geranium yesoense (Geraniaceae) includes several varieties that are mainly discriminated by two morphological features, namely, the degree of leaf incision and the density of spreading hairs on the sepals, but these features have never been objectively quantified. To clarify whether these features can truly discriminate varieties, we analyzed leaf shape and sepal pubescence, and conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis using nuclear and chloroplast DNA. Our morphological analyses showed some trends in leaf morphology and density of hairs, but failed to identify any groupings that could be clearly distinguished on the basis of these features. Our molecular analysis recognized G. yesoense as a distinct taxon, but did not support the existence of subgroups within the species. We conclude that G. yesoense must be treated as a single taxon with some tendency toward morphological variation depending on locality and habitat.

Pyrola subaphylla (Pyroleae, Ericaceae), which generally produces reddish scapes and scale-like or extremely small leaves, has been treated as a variety or form of the closely related P. japonica, which generally has green scapes and fully developed leaves, owing to observations of individuals with intermediate morphology. Recently, these two taxa were shown to differ genetically, supporting recognition of P. subaphylla as a distinct species. We identified herbarium specimens as P. subaphylla when (1) at least three shoots were mounted on the same sheet, (2) leaf blades <3.0 cm in length were present on all mounted shoots, and (3) at least one flowering shoot either lacked ordinary leaves, which are distinguished from scale-like leaves with blade >1 cm long, or bore only a single ordinary leaf. A revised taxonomic treatment of the species is proposed. In Japan, P. subaphylla occurs in Hokkaidō, Honshū (Tōhoku and Chūbu district), and Shikoku, usually in coniferous forests at 0–1,500 m.

The Dryopteris varia complex (subg. Erythrovariae, sect. Variae Fraser-Jenk.) is an apogamous fern complex. Most species of the complex are apogamous triploids; Dryopteris saxifraga and D. varia, the only known diploid sexual cytotypes in the complex, are insufficient to account for the morphological and genetic variation within the complex. In this study, we describe a new diploid sexual species, Dryopteris protobissetiana K. Hori et N. Murak., from southern Yakushima, and discuss its morphological characteristics, reproductive mode, and chromosome number. Dryopteris protobissetiana is similar to D. bissetiana in having slightly bullate scales and a dark green lamina surface, but it differs in having flat, serrate margins at the apex of the upper pinnae. Dryopteris protobissetiana is a sexual diploid with 2n=82, and may be a source of the genetic variation in the apogamous complex.

The taxonomy of Polygonatum in Japan is revised. Nine species, four nothospecies, including P. ×desoulavyi (= P. desoulavyi var. yezoense = P. miserum), P. ×domonense and P. ×azegamii (= P. desoulavyi var. azegamii), and six varieties are recognized. Desoulavy 142 is superseded by Desoulavy 143 (both in LE) as a lectotype of P. ×desoulavyi. It is presumed that P. ×desoulavyi, P. ×domonense and P. ×azegamii are hybrid derivatives between P. humile and P. involucratum, between P. involucratum and P. lasianthum, and between P. falcatum and P. involucratum, respectively. Polygonatum amabile is considered to be a species distinct from P. lasianthum, as in Yatabe's original species concept. Polygonatum trichosanthum is reduced to var. trichosanthum under P. falcatum. A key to the species, nothospecies and varieties is provided.

To evaluate the evolutionary relationships among species of Peperomia subg. Micropiper, a phylogenetic analysis based on the DNA sequences of plastid regions atpB-rbcL, psbK-I, rpL16, rpS16, trnG, trnK (including matK), trnL-L-F, and trnS-G was conducted using 20 species, in addition to four outgroup species. The trnK sequences of 46 species and trnL-L-F sequence of one species were quoted from GenBank and also included in the analysis. The results showed that P. subg. Micropiper includes seven major clades, which are also supported by morphological characteristics. They are recognized as sectionequivalent plant groups, namely Alatoid, Blandoid, Glabelloid, Glaucoid, Japonicoid, Lanceolatoid, and Rotundifolioid. A chromosome analysis of the subgenus yielded nine new counts: 2n = 22 (diploid) for P. alata, P. bicolor, P. diaphanoides, P. flexicaulis, P. hylophila, P. polystachya and P. prosterata, 2n = 44(tetraploid) for P. okinawensis and 2n = 132 (dodecaploid) for P. reticulata. Japonicoid, which occurs outside the Americas, i.e. in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific islands, is tetraploid, decaploid, and dodecaploid (not diploid), while the remaining six plant groups are native to the Americas and diploid (except Glaucoid, which is tetraploid). Further, P. diaphanoides is conspecific with P. glabella. Peperomia boninsimensis from the Ogasawara Islands, Japan, is more closely related to Polynesian species than to other Japanese species. Peperomia okinawensis should be regarded as a variety of P. japonica.

Flowering individuals of an unknown species of Gastrodia were discovered on Yakushima Island, Japan. While those plants were somewhat similar to Gastrodia fontinalis, they had shorter inflorescences, a shorter perianth tube and different number of ridges on the labellum, a combination of characteristics remarkably similar to those of G. uraiensis, which was considered to be endemic to Taiwan. Given that there were only minor differences between the original description of G. uraiensis and the plants on Yakushima Island, it was concluded that they were the same species. They represent the first known occurrence of G. uraiensis outside of Taiwan.

The taxonomic treatment of Arisaema (Araceae) in China in volume 23 of the Flora of China (FOC) in 2010 recognized 78 species in 12 sections. The circumscription of the sections was revised by Murata in 2011 and the names of the sections were reviewed more recently by Murata et al. in 2013. In the FOC the circumscription of some species was changed drastically and four new species were described. Notes on the treatment in the FOC are given, based on recent cytological and molecular data, according to the sections recognized by Murata et al. in 2013.

Based on molecular phylogenetic evidence, phylogenetic analyses of both cpDNA and nrDNA sequences based on 76 (cp) and 77 (nr) samples representing 64 species, two subspecies, and three (cp) and two (nr) varieties of Lilium and six (cp) and five (nr) samples from Cardiocrinum, Fritillaria, and Notholirion as outgroups were used to better understand relationships within Lilium and to revise its infrageneric classification. The same individuals were used for both cpDNA and nrDNA analyses to avoid confusion caused by genetic polymorphism within a species. Nine thousand eight hundred thirty seven bp from 10 cpDNA regions and 1069 bp from the nuclear (ITS + ETS) regions were analyzed. The same twelve clades were formed in Lilium in both the chloroplast and nuclear trees (one clade of the former tree and one clade of the latter tree were not strictly formed because of low resolution). In light of the cpDNA and nrDNA trees obtained, 13 morphological characters, including a pair of marginal ridges along a central groove on the adaxial surface of the tepals were examined with attention given for the first time to the use of this character as having diagnostic value. The morphological evidence supported the twelve clades. Based on molecular and morphological evidence, a revised infrageneric classification of Lilium recognizing twelve clades as twelve sections is proposed.

Flowering and dispersal phenology, characteristics of fruits, seed shape, and seed and embryo sizes were studied in orchids in the warm temperate zone of Japan. Anemochorous potential was estimated based on the ratio of seed length to embryo length. The data obtained were compared among different life forms: epiphyte, saprophyte (myco-heterotroph), summer green terrestrial and evergreen terrestrial or- chids. The epiphytes, which had the smallest seeds, had the poorest dispersibility. On the other hand, the saprophytes, which had elongated seeds, had excellent dispersibility. Seed size and dispersibility of ter- restrial orchids ranged between those of epiphytes and saprophytes. Most epiphytes had hygroscopic trichomes, which contributed to the release of the seeds from capsule. It was clarified that seed morphol- ogy and dispersal mechanisms in orchids were closely related to their life form.

The parentage of the Potamogeton hybrids P. ×nomotoensis Kadono & T. Noguchi and P. ×yamaga- taensis Kadono & Wiegleb (Potamogetonaceae) was studied by analyzing the plastid-encoded rbcL gene and nuclear-encoded internal transcribed spacer (ITS) from the hybrids and putative parents. The results showed P. ×nomotoensis to be a hybrid between P. natans and P. maackianus and P. ×yamagataensis a hybrid between P. natans and P. oxyphyllus. The latter is the first documentation of a hybrid between diploid and tetraploid species in Japan.

Cayratia japonica showed intra-specific polyploidy of x=20, i.e., 2n=40 (diploid) and 60 (triploid). Individuals with 2n=40 produced fruits, and formed 20 bivalents at metaphase I in meiosis, but their pollen fertilities widely varied from about 30 to 90%. Individuals with 2n=60 did not produce any fruits, formed a variable number of trivalents, bivalents and univalents at metaphase I, and showed low pollen fertilities of less than 30%. The possible occurrence of some genetic types for pollen development in diploids is discussed.

Species-level identification of aquatic plants, such as duckweeds (Lemnaceae), can be challenging due to reduced morphological features and high phenotypic plasticity. A taxonomic study of sect. Uninerves of the genus Lemna in Japan based on morphological observations and DNA analyses is reported. Two non- indigenous species, L. minuta and L. valdiviana, were confirmed to occur in Japan. Excessively small, enigmatic plants of Lemna apparently specialized to grow in spring-fed waterbodies was determined to be a form of L. minuta. It could not be concluded whether the miniature Lemna represents an ecotype adapted to cool water or an example of phenotypic variation under low temperature conditions.

A new species of Claoxylon (Euphorbiaceae), C. langbiangense, from Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park, Lam Dong Province, southern Vietnam, is described and illustrated. It resembles C. longifolium of Cambodia, NE India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam, but is distinguished by its serrate-dentate leaf margin, larger staminate flowers and shorter pistillate inflorescences. A vernacular name, preliminary conservation status for the species, and a key to the species of Claoxylon in Vietnam is also provided.
