This article shows the changes to a training syllabus for Japanese language volunteers for foreign residents in Fukui city from 2006 to 2010. The author was in charge of the conduct and evaluation of this course. The syllabus had been close to the training syllabus for "Japanese teachers" in 2006. However, the syllabus was revised because the course was re-envisioned as a guide training course for Japanese language "volunteers", who can participate in various supporting activities. Activities focusing on reflective-learning of languages were increased, instead of lectures on Japanese grammar and Japanese education. Furthermore opportunities for the attendants to have experiences of difficulties of communication with limited language proficiency were arranged in the course. Overall, the purpose of such activities is the study of how to communicate with foreign residents through supporting the learning of Japanese.
