To obtain a better understanding of the floral traits of sect. Heterotropa (genus Asarum, Aristolochiaceae), we conducted a detailed microscopic examination of the surface of the calyx, the floral part best representing the diversity of the lineage. The surface structures were highly variable among Heterotropa species, with remarkable variations in trichome morphology on the adaxial surface of the calyx lobes. Four types of trichome were identified on the calyx lobes, each of which was the sole type in most samples, although combinations of multiple types were occasionally seen. Variations were also found in the distribution of stomata on the surface of the calyx. Although the biological functions of the trichomes and stomata on the calyx are unclear, they may be related to pollination systems, e.g., through emission of the floral scents that are highly variable among Heterotropa species.

The lichen mycota of the Imperial Palace Grounds, Tokyo, Japan was revised in the light of ITS rDNA sequences and updated knowledge. The following, formerly unidentified or misidentified species were revealed: Candelaria asiatica (as ‘C. concolor’) and Flavoplaca flavocitrina (as ‘Caloplaca aff. citrina’) are new to Japan, and Cladonia rei (as ‘C. ramulosa’), Pertusaria flavicans, Phaeographis pruinosa, and Phaeophyscia limbata (as ‘P. hispidula’) are new to the Imperial Palace Grounds. The ITS rDNA sequences for 31 species were successfully obtained from 81 specimens as well as 12 specimens collected from other places outside of the Imperial Palace Grounds. The BLAST search with registered sequences in GenBank was performed for each sample.

A new species of the genus Alpinia subgenus Alpinia subsection Catimbium (Zingiberaceae), A. nelumboides is described from Laos and Vietnam. It is morphologically most similar to A. kwangsiensis, but distinguished by its large pinkish bracteoles, shorter petioles, entire margin of labellum, and larger pubescent ovoid fruits.

A detailed description, macro- and microphotographs, and line drawings are given for a new record of an operculate discomycete, Byssonectria cartilaginea. A note is given for a previously confused pezizalean discomycete, Phylloscypha phyllogena.

We assessed plausible linkages between floral variation and pollination-system diversity in the genus Asarum (sect. Heterotropa) by investigating the floral-visitor and floral-scent profiles of Asarum asaroides (C.Morren et Decne.) Makino, a large-flowered species endemic to western Japan. Using time-lapse photography and field collections of insects, we confirmed that multiple dipteran families visited A. asaroides. The fungus gnat Cordyla murina Winnertz, 1863 (Mycetophilidae), is likely the primary pollinator, since we observed repeated visits by this species at three spatially distinct sites. We also reassessed the previously posited primary pollinator of A. tamaense Makino and found that C. murina is in fact the likely primary pollinator of this species. The floral-scent profile of A. asaroides typically contains ethyl 3-methylcrotonate, 3-octanone, 3-octanol, safrole, and caryophyllene, and is strikingly different from that of A. tamaense, implying that different mechanisms underlie the attraction of C. murina to these closely related species.

Lichens of Mugikusa Pass and the adjacent areas in Kita-Yatsugatake Mountains, central Japan, were surveyed from 2011 to 2018. As the result of taxonomic examinations of 390 out of 442 specimens, 146 taxa (145 species 1 subspecies 1 variety) in 64 genera were recognized. The 141 ITS rDNA sequences were successfully obtained from 84 species. Among them, Menegazzia caviisidia and Usnea longissima are known as the species of “Near Threatened (NT)” category in the Red List 2020 of Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan; Baeomyces carneus and Cetrelia cetrarioides were insufficiently understood in Japan; and Peltigera neopolydactyla and Rhizocarpon hochstetteri are species requiring further taxonomic examination. These species were discussed in detail in the species list.

A new species, Zingiber procumbens Nob.Tanaka & M.M.Aung (Zingiberaceae), from Kayah State, eastern Myanmar, is described with color plates. Zingiber procumbens is assignable to section Cryptanthium Horan. based on lateral inflorescences on the procumbent peduncles. This species is similar to Z. bradleyanum Craib in vegetative characters, but well distinguished from it by a combination of long bilobed ligules, lamina with silvery line, procumbent peduncle, tubular bracts with dark reddish stripes, and flowers with purple orbicular labellum. Detailed descriptions, color plates and preliminary IUCN assessments are provided.

One anthocyanin and three flavones were isolated from the flowers of Tripora divaricata (Lamiaceae). They were identified as delphinidin 3-O-[(6″′-E-p-coumaroylglucosyl)-(1→2)-(6″-E-p-coumaroylglucoside)]-5-O-(6″′-malonylglucoside), apigenin 7-O-glucuronide, scutellarein 4′-methyl ether 7-O-glucuronide, and acacetin 7-O-glucuronide. In addition, we measured absorption spectra of intact petal and the buffer solutions (pH 5.6) containing isolated compounds for elucidation of the blue violet color development in T. divaricata. The absorption spectral curve of the buffer solution containing isolated anthocyanin showed the blue violet. Its color was identical to that of the intact flowers. These results indicate that the intramolecular copigmentation of anthocyanin mainly occurred in the blue violet flowers of T. divaricata.

Three anthocyanins, delphinidin 3-O-glucoside, petunidin 3,5-di-O-glucoside, and petunidin 3-O-glucoside, and rosmarinic acid were isolated and identified from the flowers of three lungwort (Pulmonaria) cultivars. Composition of these compounds were quantitatively compared during two developmental stages, i.e. violet color in early flowering stage and blue color in later flowering stage. In addition, pH values of petal juices and flower color value were measured in both stages. Qualitative differences among three cultivars were observed in anthocyanins. However, qualitative and quantitative changes during development was not observed. Increase of rosmarinic acid was observed in one cultivar during development of the flowers. Notable alkalization was not revealed in vacuoles. These results mean that the flower bluing in these lungwort cultivars is not mediated by intramolecular copigmentation and alkalization of vacuole. Furthermore, we performed in vitro examination using the isolated anthocyanin, delphinidin 3-O-glucoside or petunidin 3-O-glucoside, and rosmarinic acid. As the results, it was shown that the absorption curves of the mixture solutions and intact petal did not match. Thus, it was suggested that the petal bluing after flowering may be due to intermolecular interaction which was influenced by metal ions.

The present paper is an exclusive contribution of the desmid flora of Sikkim Himalayas, India. Thirty-one species of genus Cosmarium Corda, two species of Penium and seven species of Euastrum (Desmidiales, Chlorophyceae) were identified from the samples collected during 2000 and 2001 from Sikkim Himalayas. Taxonomic description and some morphological variations of desmid species are discussed in this paper. All the taxa have been reported for the first time from the study area.

The taxonomy of Japanese Oberonia, particularly O. makinoi, has been confusing. Molecular analyses of Japanese Oberonia, including plants called “O. makinoi,” were performed. Phylogenetic trees deduced from the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the plastid matK with trnK introns, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) data derived from MIG-seq show that “O. makinoi” collected from Shikoku and Kyushu is distinctive from the other species of Oberonia. The plants called “O. makinoi” differ from O. japonica in the leaf size and the flowering season. Furthermore, samples from the Ryukyus (Okinawa and Amami Islands) appear conspecific with, or closely related to “O. makinoi.” The taxonomic treatment of Japanese Oberonia requires further analyses using samples collected from central Japan and comparison to congeners in neighboring areas, particularly in Taiwan, where similar species are distributed.

A new orchid species, Dendrobium popaense T.Yukawa & Nob.Tanaka is described from Mt. Popa, central Myanmar. It is discriminated from the closely related D. bensoniae by its smaller size in perianth lobes, its higher ratio of the length of mentum to dorsal sepal, and its conspicuously papillate operculum. From D. jinghuanum, the new species is separable by its lack of purple floral pigmentation, its lemon-yellow disk of labellum, its smaller size in perianth lobes, its higher ratio of the length of mentum to dorsal sepal, and its short, erect stem.

Phenolic compounds in the leaves of Hedysarum vicioides, an alpine plant widely distributed in Japan, were surveyed. Four flavonol glycosides, quercetin 3-O-robinobioside, 3-O-rutinoside, 3-O-galactoside and 3-O-glucoside, and a xanthone glycoside, mangiferin were identified. Both types of phenolic compounds possess UV absorbing and antioxidant properties. The overall content of phenolic compounds decreased when the plants cultivated in a growth chamber and a glasshouse, compared to plants grown in their native habitat. Under cultivated conditions, the decrease of quercetin glycosides was particularly marked. Furthermore, we also extracted components from the specimens and compared the composition of the plant with that of another congeneric species distributed in Japan, and found the differences between the two species. We describe the chemotaxonomic and ecological significance of the isolated compounds.

To clarify biogeographic patterns of two mushroom species (Phallus merulinus and Geastrum courtecuissei) previously reported from Myanmar, sequence data of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA were retrieved from GenBank. The BLAST search and phylogenetic analyses of Phallus indicated that P. merulinus and P. atrovolvatus from wide areas, including Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, Brazil, and French Guiana, cannot be distinguished molecularly. The species was, therefore, considered widespread across tropical to subtropical regions. In contrast, G. courtecuissei from Myanmar was tightly clustered exclusively with G. courtecuissei from Central and South America, supporting the idea of its disjunct distribution between Southeast Asia (Myanmar) and Central-South Americas.

Freshwater red algal specimens that were collected from the streams or watercourses in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture and Daisen Town, Tottori Prefecture, Japan were identified as Sheathia abscondita Stancheva, Sheath & M.L.Vis (Batrachospermaceae, Batrachospermales) using rbcL DNA analyses. This is the first record of the species from Japan. This species was segregated from the homocorticate species of Sheathia, S. arcuata (Kylin) Salomaki & M.L.Vis in 2020, mainly via DNA sequences based on materials from California, Washington and Hawaii, and therefore, S. abscondita didn’t have enough information on its distribution outside of U.S.A. The finding of this species from the two localities suggests that S. abscondita is hidden under “S. arcuata” reported from Japan so far, because this name tends to be used for most brown batrachospermacean algae based on limited morphological observations.

A taxonomic revision, including a key to the species, synonymy and taxonomic notes, of the two genera and six species Podostemaceae of Japan is presented. Cladopus is represented by C. doianus and C. fukienensis, and Hydrobryum, by H. japonicum, H. floribundum, H. puncticulatum, and H. koribanum. Of these, H. floribundum, H. puncticulatum, and H. koribanum are endemic to Japan, while the others are distributed in China (Fujian, Yunnan) and also northern Thailand.

Eleven species in three genera in Hypnaceae and four species in four genera in Hylocomiaceae are reported based on the collections made in the Tien Shan Mountains in 1995. Hypnum callichroum and H. subimponens subsp. subimponens are new records for the moss flora of Kazakhstan, and Hypnum cupressiforme var. subjulaceum and H. recurvatum are new to Kyrgyxstan. A key for the Hypnum species in Kazakhstan and Kyrgystan is shown.
