In recent years Vygotskian theory on the development of thinking and speech have been attracting attention of second language researchers and teachers. However,nobody has ever theorized second language acquisition or development in the spirit of Vygotskian theory. In this paper I first paves the ground by summarizing Vygotsky's theory on the development of verbal thinking and also his discussions on foreign language learning/acquisition. Then I propose a theory of second language development from Vygotskian perspective

This study investigated the structure of "partial understanding"and "understanding" from the perspective of L.S. Vygotsky. This paper discusses the theories of Russian formalists, paying particular attention to the work of L.P. Jakubinskij as a precursor to Vygotsky's semiotics. Jakubinskij's framework of "dialogue" and "monologue" influenced Vygotsky's ideas of "development"; dialogue refers to the semiotic interaction form "in" a context, and monologue refers to the interaction form "between" contexts. The structure of understanding is thus interpreted as the capacity of speakers that enables communications beyond the boundaries of exclusive contexts gained through "zones of proximal development".
