This article reviewed DeLoache's studies on the development of children's understanding of symbol. DeLoache defined a symbol as follows : "A symbol is something that someone intends to stand for or represent something other than itself." Firstly, we examined this definition in terms of five elements (someone, something [symbol, referent], represent or stand for, intend). Secondly, we discussed DeLoache's theory which emphasized the importance of symbol's dual nature and reviewed her findings providing a strong support for it. Finally, we described the future direction about the research of the symbolic understanding.
