In this paper, the possibility of new technologies which will be developed by integrating art and technology is discussed by referring problems current technology is facing. It is also stated that, by combining virtual reality technologies and AI technologies, with artistic approaches, the possibility exists that fundamental technologies as well as systems and services for new communications can be created. As examples of this new direction, some projects are introduced that are being done at ATR Media Integration & Communications Research Laboratories.

The landscape simulation system applied virtual reality technology is extremely effective compared to a former system. The theoretical analysis concerned to a presentation method and its computer simulation have been executed. And, the visibility and recognized distance error are examined by human experiment. Finally, results of both computer simulation and experiment are considered, and those are fairly coincident in an inclination.

To build a VR training system for visuo-motor skills (i.e., hand-eye coordinated skills), a visual interface should be correctly registered to a haptic interface so that the visual sensation and the haptic sensation are consistent spatially and temporally. In this paper, we propose a method to realize correct visual/haptic registration. The proposed method provides correct visual/haptic registration using a vision-based object tracking technique and a video keying technique. The combination of the encountered type haptic interface approach with the motion command type impedance display algorithm makes it possible to realize two extreme cases: free motion and rigid constraint. The first prototype has been built and the proposed concept was demonstrated.
