In recent years, a substantial amount of photovoltaic (PV) generations have been installed in power systems. However, the power output from the PVs is random and intermittent in nature. Therefore, the PV generations pose many challenges to the power system operation. To solve these issues, we propose that pumped storage hydro power plant (PSHPP) is used effectively. In this paper, a new method for scheduling effective operating patterns for PSHPP that make it possible to improve both reliability and economy is presented.

The mega-solar demonstration project named “Verification of Grid Stabilization with Large-scale PV Power Generation systems” had been completed in March 2011 at Wakkanai, the northernmost city of Japan. The major objectives of this project were to evaluate adverse impacts of large-scale PV power generation systems connected to the power grid and develop output control technologies with integrated battery storage system. This paper describes the outline and results of this project. These results show the effectiveness of battery storage system and also proposed output control methods for a large-scale PV system to ensure stable operation of power grids. NEDO, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan conducted this project and HEPCO, Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Inc managed the overall project.

The rapid increase of wind power plants and enlargement of capacity makes the lightning problem of the wind power plants including blades serious. This report summarizes the result of the comprehensive surveillance study carried out for these several years. The contents lightning outages, the lightning phenomena and the result of the electric discharge experiment in connection with the measure against lightning of a windmill blades. Furthermore, the state of the present condition of the protective measures in the blades of windmill, mechanical parts, connecting power lines and communication lines was also considered. Especially grounding methods for wind power plants are considered.

Wind power provokes increasing concerns on its impacts on a power system as many wind power generators have been integrated to a power system. One of the concerns is a challenge to keep supply-and-demand balance in a power system.Battery energy storage systems (BESS) installed at a wind farm are considered as a promising option for the challenge. Two types of operation strategies were proposed for its operation: fluctuation mitigation and scheduled output types. On the other hand, in order to constitute an economical BESS, selecting battery size as small as possible is vital. However, for the scheduled output operation, no study has been published both on the required battery size and on a methodology to examine the size.This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the required kWh capacity of battery for the scheduled output operation using accumulated prediction error of a wind farm. The methodology evaluates a standard deviation of accumulated prediction error with autocovariance functions of prediction error. Based upon the statistical characteristics obtained for actual prediction error of wind power, the paper presents results of a sample study to show the effectiveness of the methodology.

Recently the high attention for fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is pushing to construct the hydrogen supplying station for FCEV in the world. The hydrogen pressure supplied at the current test station is intended to be high for increasing the FCEV’s driving distance. The water electrolysis can produce cleanly the hydrogen by utilizing the electricity from renewable energy without emitting CO2 to atmosphere, when it is compared to be the popular reforming process of fossil fuel in the industry. The power required for the high-pressure water electrolysis, where water is pumped up to high-pressure, may be smaller than the power for the atmospheric water electrolysis, where the produced atmospheric hydrogen is pumped up by compressor, since the compression power for water is much smaller than that for hydrogen gas. In this study the ideal water electrolysis voltage up to 70MPa and 523K is estimated referring to both the results by LeRoy et al up to 10MPa and 523K, and to the latest steam table. By using this high-pressure water electrolysis voltage, the power required for high-pressure hydrogen produced by the high-pressure water electrolysis method is estimated to be about 5% smaller than that by the atmospheric water electrolysis method, by assuming the compressor and pump efficiency of 50%.

New small-scale dispersed generation systems, such as fuel cells and micro gas-turbines have made remarkable advances lately and they will be applied practically in the near future. Although a large number of researches on the introduction of small-scale dispersed generation systems have been carried out, only a small number of small-scale dispersed generation systems are considered in these researches. Therefore, little is known about problems to be solved in case where a large number of small-scale dispersed generation systems are introduced into electric power systems. This paper deals with a super distributed energy system that consists of a great number of dispersed generation systems such as fuel cells, micro gas turbines and so on. The behavior of a customer with a dispersed generation system is simulated as the Ising model in statistical mechanics. The necessity of a distribution network in super distributed energy systems is discussed based on the Ising model. The feasibility of decentralized autonomous control using vicinity information is also investigated on the basis of stability analysis of the Hopfield neural network model.

A severe fault may cause loss of synchronism of a small number of generators. And it may make many generators out of service resulting in wide area blackout. When two groups of generators lose synchronism, the magnitudes of voltage on some lines becomes zero. Therefore an approach that lines with zero voltage are opened has been employed actually in order to prevent loss of synchronism from extension. This paper presents a new method using voltage and current measured on a line during disturbance to detect the line with zero voltage at the instant when loss of synchronism takes place. A method to detect loss of synchronism using voltage and current measured on a line was already proposed. This paper presents results of the tests performed by using power system simulator which is composed of a DC-motor, a synchronous generator, artificial transmission line, circuit breaker equipments and so on. The validity of proposed methods was verified by finding loss of synchronism correctly.

A modification method of finite element meshes based on the adaptive meshing for optimization of electric machines is proposed. In the optimization process of the machine, the proposed method generates the mesh for the new shape from the previous mesh with minor modification. The locations of the nodes for the new shape are decided by solving the Laplace's equation, whose unknowns are displacements of the nodes. The advantages are clarified by the application to the shape optimization of an IPM motor.
