Ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) is becoming very popular for designing high-throughput forwarding engines on routers. However, TCAM has potential problems in terms of hardware and power costs, which limits its ability to deploy large amounts of capacity in IP routers. In this paper, we propose new hardware architecture for fast forwarding engines, called fast prefix search RAM-based hardware (FPS-RAM). We designed FPS-RAM hardware with the intent of maintaining the same search performance and physical user interface as TCAM because our objective is to replace the TCAM in the market. Our RAM-based hardware architecture is completely different from that of TCAM and has dramatically reduced the costs and power consumption to 62% and 52%, respectively. We implemented FPS-RAM on an FPGA to examine its lookup operation.

The integration of social networking concepts into the Internet of Things has led to the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) paradigm, and trust evaluation is essential to secure interaction in SIoT. In SIoT, when resource-constrained nodes respond to unexpected malicious services and malicious recommendations, the trust assessment is prone to be inaccurate, and the existing architecture has the risk of privacy leakage. An edge-cloud collaborative trust evaluation architecture in SIoT is proposed in this paper. Utilize the resource advantages of the cloud and the edge to complete the trust assessment task collaboratively. An evaluation algorithm of relationship closeness between nodes is designed to evaluate neighbor nodes' reliability in SIoT. A trust computing algorithm with enhanced sensitivity is proposed, considering the fluctuation of trust value and the conflict between trust indicators to enhance the sensitivity of identifying malicious behaviors. Simulation results show that compared with traditional methods, the proposed trust evaluation method can effectively improve the success rate of interaction and reduce the false detection rate when dealing with malicious services and malicious recommendations.

This paper details the design of a plate that controls the beam direction in an aperture array excited by a waveguide 2-plane hybrid coupler. The beam direction can be controlled in the range of ±15-32deg. in the quasi H-plane, and ±26-54deg. in the quasi E-plane at the design frequency of 66.425GHz. Inductive irises are introduced into tapered waveguides in the plate and the reflection is suppressed by narrow apertures. A plate that has a larger tilt angle in the quasi E-plane and another plate with conventional rectangular waveguide ports as a reference are fabricated and measured. The measured values agree well with the simulation results.

In this study, we develop a numerical method for determining transient energy deposition in biological bodies exposed to electromagnetic (EM) pulses. We use a newly developed frequency-dependent finite-difference time-domain (FD2TD) method, which is combined with the fast inverse Laplace transform (FILT) and Prony method. The FILT and Prony method are utilized to transform the Cole-Cole model of biological media into a sum of multiple Debye relaxation terms. Parameters of Debye terms are then extracted by comparison with the time-domain impulse responses. The extracted parameters are used in an FDTD formulation, which is derived using the auxiliary differential equation method, and transient energy deposition into a biological medium is calculated by the equivalent circuit method. The validity of our proposed method is demonstrated by comparing numerical results and those derived from an analytical method. Finally, transient energy deposition into human heads of TARO and HANAKO models is then calculated using the proposed method and, physical insights into pulse exposures of the human heads are provided.

TCP/IP, the foundation of the current Internet, assumes a sufficiently low packet loss rate for links in communication path. On the other hand, for communication services such as mobile and wireless communications, communication link tends to be disruptive. In this paper, we propose Layer-5 temporally-spliced path protocol (L5-TSPP), which provides disruption-tolerance in the L5 temporally-spliced path (L5-TSP), as one of the communication paths provided by Layer-5 (L5-paths). We design and implement an API for using L5-paths (L5 API). The L5 API is designed and implemented to support not only POSIX systems but also non-POSIX systems. L5 API and L5-TSPP are implemented in the user space in Go language. The measurement results show that L5-TSP achieves lower and more stable connection establishment time and better end-to-end throughput in the presence of disruption than conventional communication paths.

This paper proposes a fast and scalable traffic monitoring system called Fast xFlow Proxy. For efficiently provisioning and operating networks, xFlow such as IPFIX and NetFlow is a promising technology for visualizing the detailed traffic matrix in a network. However, internet protocol (IP) packets in a large carrier network are encapsulated with various outer headers, e.g., layer 2 tunneling protocol (L2TP) or multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) labels. As native xFlow technologies are applied to the outer header, the desired inner information cannot be visualized. From this motivation, we propose Fast xFlow Proxy, which explores the complicated carrier's packet, extracts inner information properly, and relays the inner information to a general flow collector. Fast xFlow Proxy should be able to handle various packet processing operations possible (e.g., header analysis, header elimination, and statistics) at a wire rate. To realize the processing speed needed, we implement Fast xFlow Proxy using the data plane development kit (DPDK) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA). By optimizing deployment of processes between DPDK and FPGA, Fast xFlow Proxy achieves wire rate processing. From evaluations, we can achieve over 20 Gbps performance by using a single server and 100 Gbps performance by using scale-out architecture. We also show that this performance is sufficiently practical for monitoring a nationwide carrier network.

Weighted Round-Robin (WRR) is often used, due to its simplicity, for scheduling packets or tasks. With WRR, a number of packets equal to the weight allocated to a flow can be served consecutively, which leads to a bursty service. Interleaved Weighted Round-Robin (IWRR) is a variant that mitigates this effect. We are interested in finding bounds on worst-case delay obtained with IWRR. To this end, we use a network calculus approach and find a strict service curve for IWRR. The result is obtained using the pseudo-inverse of a function. We show that the strict service curve is the best obtainable one, and that delay bounds derived from it are tight (i.e., worst-case) for flows of packets of constant size. Furthermore, the IWRR strict service curve dominates the strict service curve for WRR that was previously published. We provide some numerical examples to illustrate the reduction in worst-case delays caused by IWRR compared to WRR.

In a heterogeneous unreliable multiaccess network, wherein terminals share a common wireless channel with distinct error probabilities, existing works have shown that a persistent round-robin (RR-P) scheduling policy can be arbitrarily worse than the optimum in terms of Age of Information (AoI) under standard Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ). In this paper, practical Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) schemes which are widely-used in today's wireless networks are considered. We show that RR-P is very close to optimum with asymptotically many terminals in this case, by explicitly deriving tight, closed-form AoI gaps between optimum and achievable AoI by RR-P. In particular, it is rigorously proved that for RR-P, under HARQ models concerning fading channels (resp. finite-blocklength regime), the relative AoI gap compared with the optimum is within a constant of 6.4% (resp. 6.2% with error exponential decay rate of 0.5). In addition, RR-P enjoys the distinctive advantage of implementation simplicity with channel-unaware and easy-to-decentralize operations, making it favorable in practice. A further investigation considering constraint imposed on the number of retransmissions is presented. The performance gap is indicated through numerical simulations.

Bitcoin is one of popular cryptocurrencies widely used over the world, and its blockchain technology has attracted considerable attention. In Bitcoin system, it has been reported that transactions are prioritized according to transaction fees, and that transactions with high priorities are likely to be confirmed faster than those with low priorities. In this paper, we consider performance modeling of Bitcoin-blockchain system in order to characterize the transaction-confirmation time. We first introduce the Bitcoin system, focusing on proof-of-work, the consensus mechanism of Bitcoin blockchain. Then, we show some queueing models and its analytical results, discussing the implications and insights obtained from the queueing models.

With the spread of the broadband Internet and high-performance devices, various services have become available anytime, anywhere. As a result, attention is focused on the service quality and Quality of Experience (QoE) is emphasized as an evaluation index from the user's viewpoint. Since QoE is a subjective evaluation metric and deeply involved with user perception and expectation, quantitative and comparative research was difficult because the QoE study is still in its infancy. At present, after tremendous devoted efforts have contributed to this research area, a shape of the QoE management architecture has become clear. Moreover, not only for research but also for business, video streaming services are expected as a promising Internet service incorporating QoE. This paper reviews the present state of QoE studies with the above background and describes the future prospect of QoE. Firstly, the historical aspects of QoE is reviewed starting with QoS (Quality of Service). Secondly, a QoE management architecture is proposed in this paper, which consists of QoE measurement, QoE assessment, QoS-QoE mapping, QoE modeling, and QoE adaptation. Thirdly, QoE studies related with video streaming services are introduced, and finally individual QoE and physiology-based QoE measurement methodologies are explained as future prospect in the field of QoE studies.

The conventional universal filtered-DFT-spread-OFDM (UF-DFTs-OFDM) can drastically improve the out-of-band emission (OOBE) caused by the discontinuity between symbols in the conventional cyclic prefix-based DFTs-OFDM (CP-DFTs-OFDM). However, the UF-DFTs-OFDM degrades the communication quality in a long-delay multipath fading environment due to the frequency-domain ripple derived from the long transition time of the low pass filter (LPF) corresponding to the guard interval (GI). In this paper, we propose an enhanced UF-DFTs-OFDM (eUF-DFTs-OFDM) that achieves significantly low OOBE and high communication quality even in a long-delay multipath fading environment. The eUF-DFTs-OFDM applies an LPF with quite short length in combination with the zero padding (ZP) or the CP process. Then, the characteristics of the OOBE, peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and block error rate (BLER) are evaluated by computer simulation with the LTE uplink parameters. The result confirms that the eUF-DFTs-OFDM can improve the OOBE by 22.5dB at the channel-edge compared to the CP-DFTs-OFDM, and also improve the ES/N0 to achieve BLER =10-3 by about 2.5dB for QPSK and 16QAM compared to the UF-DFTs-OFDM. For 64QAM, the proposed eUF-DFTs-ODFDM can eliminate the error floor of the UF-DFTs-OFDM. These results indicate that the proposed eUF-DFTs-OFDM can significantly reduce the OOBE while maintaining the same level of communication quality as the CP-DFTs-OFDM even in long-delay multipath environment.

In order to utilize higher frequency bands above 6GHz, which is an important technical challenge in fifth generation mobile systems, radio propagation channel properties in a large variety of deployment scenarios should be thoroughly investigated. The authors' group has been involved in a fundamental research project aimed at investigating multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) transmission performance and propagation channel properties at microwave frequency above 10GHz from 2009 to 2013, and since then they have been conducting measurement and modeling for high frequency bands. This paper aims at providing comprehensive tutorial of a whole procedure of channel modeling; multi-dimensional channel sounding, propagation channel measurement, analysis, and modeling, by introducing the developed MIMO channel sounders at high frequency bands of 11 and 60GHz and presenting some measurement results in a microcell environment at 11GHz. Furthermore, this paper identifies challenges in radio propagation measurements, and discusses current/future channel modeling issues as future works.

With the rapid increase of link speed in recent years, packet sampling has become a very attractive and scalable means in collecting flow statistics; however, it also makes inferring original flow characteristics much more difficult. In this paper, we develop techniques and schemes to identify flows with a very large number of packets (also known as heavy-hitter flows) from sampled flow statistics. Our approach follows a two-stage strategy: We first parametrically estimate the original flow length distribution from sampled flows. We then identify heavy-hitter flows with Bayes' theorem, where the flow length distribution estimated at the first stage is used as an a priori distribution. Our approach is validated and evaluated with publicly available packet traces. We show that our approach provides a very flexible framework in striking an appropriate balance between false positives and false negatives when sampling frequency is given.

Potential games form a class of non-cooperative games where the convergent of unilateral improvement dynamics is guaranteed in many practical cases. The potential game approach has been applied to a wide range of wireless network problems, particularly to a variety of channel assignment problems. In this paper, the properties of potential games are introduced, and games in wireless networks that have been proven to be potential games are comprehensively discussed.

The need of telecommunications operators to reduce Capital and Operational Expenditures in networks which traffic is continuously growing has made them search for new alternatives to simplify and automate their procedures. Because of the different transport network segments and multiple layers, the deployment of end-to-end services is a complex task. Also, because of the multiple vendor existence, the control plane has not been fully homogenized, making end-to-end connectivity services a manual and slow process, and the allocation of computing resources across the entire network a difficult task. The new massive capacity requested by Data Centers and the new 5G connectivity services will urge for a better solution to orchestrate the transport network and the distributed computing resources. This article presents and demonstrates a Network Slicing solution together with an end-to-end service orchestration for transport networks. The Network Slicing solution permits the co-existence of virtual networks (one per service) over the same physical network to ensure the specific service requirements. The network orchestrator allows automated end-to-end services across multi-layer multi-domain network segments making use of the standard Transport API (TAPI) data model for both l0 and l2 layers. Both solutions will allow to keep up with beyond 5G services and the higher and faster demand of network and computing resources.

This paper argues that a layered approach is more suitable for Information Centric Networking (ICN) than a narrow-waist approach and proposes an ICN mechanism called ZINK. In ZINK, a location-independent content name is resolved to a list of node IDs of content servers in the application layer and a node ID is mapped to a node locator in the network layer, which results in scalable locator-based routing. An ID/Locator split approach in the network layer can efficiently support client/serever mobility. Efficient content transfer is achieved by using sophisticated functions in the transport layer such as multipath transfer for bandwidth aggregation or fault tolerance. Existing well-tuned congestion control in the transport layer achieves fairness not only among ICN flows but also among ICN flows and other flows. A proof-of concept prototype of ZINK is implemented on an IPv6 stack. Evaluation results show that the time for content finding is practical, efficient content transfer is possible by using multipath transfer, and the mobility support mechanism is scalable as shown in a nationwide experiment environment in Japan.

In this paper, we present a transmission scheme for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) quasi-static fading channel with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). In this scheme, we develop a precoder structure to exploit the available CSIT and apply spatial coupling for further performance enhancement. We derive an analytical evaluation method based on extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) functions, which provides convenience for our precoder design. Furthermore, we observe an area property indicating that, for a spatially coupled system, the iterative receiver can perform error-free decoding even the original uncoupled system has multiple fixed points in its EXIT chart. This observation implies that spatial coupling is useful to alleviate the uncertainty in CSIT which causes difficulty in designing LDPC code based on the EXIT curve matching technique. Numerical results are presented, showing an excellent performance of the proposed scheme in MIMO fading channels with imperfect CSIT.

This paper proposes a novel multiple access method that enables concurrent sensor data streaming from multiple batteryless, wireless sensor tags. The access method is a pseudo-FDMA scheme based on the subcarrier backscatter communication principle, which is widely employed in passive RFID and radar systems. Concurrency is realized by assigning a dedicated subcarrier to each sensor tag and letting all sensor tags backscatter simultaneously. Because of the nature of the subcarrier, which is produced by constant rate switching of antenna impedance without any channel filter in the sensor tag, the tag-to-reader link always exhibits harmonics. Thus, it is important to reject harmonics when concurrent data streaming is required. This paper proposes a harmonics rejecting receiver to allow simultaneous multiple subcarrier usage. This paper particularly focuses on analog sensor data streaming which minimizes the functional requirements on the sensor tag and frequency bandwidth. The harmonics rejection receiver is realized by carefully handling group delay and phase delay of the subcarrier envelope and the carrier signal to accurately produce replica of the harmonics by introducing Hilbert and inverse Hilbert transformations. A numerical simulator with Simulink and a hardware implementation with USRP and LabVIEW have been developed. Simulations and experiments reveal that even if the CIR before harmonics rejection is 0dB, the proposed receiver recovers the original sensor data with over 0.98 cross-correlation.

The use of computing resources on network is becoming active in the Internet and private networks. OpenFlow/Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is drawing attention as a method to control network virtualization for the cloud computing services and other carrier services. This paper introduces examples of OpenFlow/SDN technologies applied to commercial cloud services. Various activities to expand coverage over commercial carrier networks are also mentioned.
