The number of professional baseball fans in Japan has greatly increased by the following three reasons: 1)Japanese professional baseball teams have recently become quite strong and competitive internationally; 2) uniquely Japanese baseball culture has permeated throughout Japan; and 3) each professional baseball team has its own homebaseball stadium where the players receive enthusiastic support from their fans in the stand. These reasons worked synergistically to give rise to vigorous and loud yelling from the stand in every ball game. Local fan’s yelling necessarily reflects each local dialect. In the present paper, the author attempted to collect and survey yelling words spoken in Osaka dialects by spectators in the stand of baseball stadiums in Kansai areas. These yells were categorized according to the purpose of yelling, and their words were evaluated to demonstrate how effectively those dialectal expressions were utilized. Yelling in baseball games plays an important role to enkindle the atmosphere of a baseball game. On the other hand, there is also a problem of inappropriateness arising from careless usage of unsuitable expressions in a yell.Inappropriate yells should be minimized to keep other fellow-fans’ ball game watching pleasant.

Yams such as ‘nagaimo’ and ‘tukuneimo’ are usually grated and eaten without cooking. Yam is one of a few starch-rich foods that can be eaten without cooking. The grated ‘nagaimo’ and ‘tukuneimo’ pastes were incubated at 37℃ for 120 min, but no increases in reduced sugar were detected. The starch granules prepared from ‘nagaimo’ and ‘tukuneimo’ were incubated with pancreatin of pig origin. The digestive rate of theraw starch of ‘nagaimo’ was only 5% to alpha-starch, and was the same as those of raw starch from ‘tukuneimo’ and potato. These results show that the reason for yams being eaten without cooking could not be ascribable to raw yam starch. Why are yams eaten without cooking? It is suggested that the taste of grated yams is ascribableto their visco-elastic properties.. (accepted. Nov. 30, 2009)

Comparison was attempted between the free verse style haiku poets. Santohka Taneda and Hohsai Ozaki.1. Santohka published collections of his haiku poems during his life time while. Hohsai published none while he was alive.2. Santohka, like Bashoh Matsuo, wrote many of his poems on changeable Nature, landscapes, and human sentiments during his frequent journeys while Hohsai produced as many as nearly 3000 poems over the period of 8 months beforehis death as a solitary janitor of a Buddhist temple in his desperate effects to be regaeded as a poet.3. Many of Santohka's haiku poems are considered to be of a variation in style not far from the traditional haiku style of 5-7-5 syllables whereas Hohsai largely neglected the haiku rules in his so-called one-phrase poems.

The art of classical comic story telling (RAKUGO) was so far transmitted through person to person instruction from a professional to another (usually a disciple). It was not common to transmit the art of RAKUGO from a professional to an amateur, for the transmission of RAKUGO has been only possible in a mentor to pupil relationship. However, I realize some significance in the transmission of the art of RAKUGO from a professional to an amateur. In this paper, I will give my thoughts about usefulness of the art of narration in RAKUGO through a series of lectures and lessons for some vocational school students. I will discuss the following three points: (1) skills in RAKUGO, (2) utility of the skills of RAKUGO, and (3) philosophics in RAKUGO.

In this paper, the author discusses development processes of popular music (including foreign numbers) in Japan over the period of nearly one century after the end of Meiji Era. He tried to include in his study materials as many songs as possible, which represent respective periods of time.During the Pacifi c War, the style of popular music in Japan was severely restricted under militarism. Therefore, the political environment entirely changed from the prewar days. As a result, popular music in Japan has also completely changed. People can fully enjoy all kinds of popular music now.He makes clear that, in the history of popular music, there are relationships closely influenced by political environment, economic fluctuation, internationalization, change in people’s interest, and progress in the media world of the time.

Controlling postprandial hyperglycemia has been recognized to be beneficial for prevention and reduction of cardiovascular risks in diabetic patients. In this study, we evaluated acute effects of exercise after meal ingestion on postprandial blood glucose in order to develop an exercise prescription for reduction of the spike-like blood glucose elevation. Five healthy women ingested 200 g of rice and exercised (slow-paced walking, fast-paced walking or jogging) for 25 minutes at 30 minutes after the meal ingestion. For further evaluation of the acute effects of muscle contraction on blood glucose, we also examined a foot bath which increased the local blood flow in the muscles of the lower legs without muscle contraction, and combinatorial number-placement puzzles (Sudoku) which activated brain activity. Blood glucose was measured in fasting and at 30, 60, and 120 min after meal ingestion.Control data were obtained from the same subjects in the sitting position during the experiment. At the end of exercise, all the exercise lowered blood glucose by 40~50mg/dL compared with the control.(p<0.01). At 60 min after exercise, the blood glucose level in slow-paced walking remained depressed. However, the blood glucose levels in fast-paced walking and jogging were elevated over the control, particularly, that in jogging was significantly higher (p<0.05). The foot bath and Sudoku resulted in no significant change compared with the control. A single bout of exercise after meal ingestion lowered blood glucose at the end of exercise. However, intense exercise induced a reactive elevation in blood glucose following the temporary reduction. Additionally, muscle contraction was necessary for blood glucose to be lowered. These results suggested that an exercise prescription such as 20-30 min of slow-paced walking without any change in heart rate at 30 min after meal ingestion was effective for the reduction of the blood glucose elevation after meal ingestion.(accepted. Rakugo and Kyohgen could both be classified as humorous comedeies representing the world of Japanese traditional performing arts. However, their vectors of laughter are widely different. The leading role in Osaka Rakugo is played by Kiroku while that of Kyohgen is played by Taro Kaja. Behavioral differences between the two leading roles reflect differences in dramatic stance between the two performing arts. Kiroku is alwayslaughed at the audience at the end of the story whereas Taro Kaja often finishes the drama by laughing at other figures in the story. The leading role in Rakugo is a fool who is always the target of laughter while the leading role in Kyohgen is an underdog who enjoys himself by laughing at his "overdog" in the play. Both Kiroku and Taro Kajya gain popularity through the audience's sympathy towards their behaviors in each comedy, but the differences is evident in the feelings received from the two leading roles, i.e., Kirokus failures are always laughed at while Taro Kaja induces laughter by playing trics on others in the play, although the audience's verbal reactions to both would often be the same, i.e., "It couldnt be helped that he behaved that way." In the present treatise, I attempted to discuss the essence and functions of Rakugo and general comedies in turn, which appeared distinct by comparison between Rakugo and Kyohgen.
