The constitutions of the Al-rich alloys containing Cu and Mg were investigated by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination. ation. From various constitutional sections taken as constant in Al-content or taken through the Al axis, the following conclusions were drawn: (1). In a range of Cu 50% and Mg 40%, the primary separations are (Al), CuAl2, S, T, β and X, where S and T being in equilibrium with (Al), denote ternary compounds Al13Cu7Mg8 and Al5CuMg4 respectively, β is an intermediate phase existing between Al and Mg and X is an unknown phase not determined in this investigation. (2). The ternary compounds Al13Cu7Mg8. and Al5CuMg4 were found to exist. (3). The uni-variant reaction lines were found to be: -Liq_??_(Al)+CuAl2, Liq_??_(Al)+S, Liq_??_(Al)+T, Liq_??_(Al)+β, Liq_??_CuAl2+S, Liq+T_??_S, Liq+X_??_S, Liq+X_??_T, Liq_??_T+β, and the in-variant points were; Liq (Al)+CuAl2+S, at 500°, Liq_??_(Al)+T+β, at 447°, Liq+S_??_T+(Al), at 465°, and Liq+X_??_S+T, at 525°. (4). It is concluded that the natural ageing of Duralumin and 24S-type Super-Duralumin is mainly concerned with the solid solubilily change of S-compound and CuAl2 or that of S-compound in Aluminium.

In order to clarify the effect of high hydrostatic pressure on the brittle fracture stress, the three-point bending tests have been carried out for an Fe&ndash;Cr alloy (&sigma; phase) containing about 47%Cr and 0.7%Si at atmospheric pressure and under 800 MPa at temperatures up to 1200 K. In the temperature range from room temperature to 1140 K, the specimens remained in the &sigma; phase and the transgranular cleavage fracture occurred under both pressures. By scanning electron microscopy, the fracture surface was found to comprise the river pattern and the Wallner lines. The fracture stress at atmospheric pressure increased gradually with increasing temperature to about 1000 K and increased rapidly at higher temperatures. The same tendency was observed in the tests under 800 MPa but the fracture stress under 800 MPa was always higher than that at atmospheric pressure, and the difference between these stresses became larger at temperatures higher than about 1000 K. From a consideration of the stress condition around a crack, a formula &sigma;<I><SUB>FP</SUB></I>=&sigma;<SUB><I>F</I>0</SUB>+<I>P</I>&frasl;<I>K</I><SUB>&sigma;</SUB> was proposed to represent the influence of hydrostatic pressure on the brittle fracture stress at low temperatures, where &sigma;<SUB><I>F</I>0</SUB> and &sigma;<I><SUB>FP</SUB></I> are the fracture stresses at atmospheric pressure and under high pressure, <I>P</I> is the pressure in positive sign and <I>K</I><SUB>&sigma;</SUB> is the stress concentration factor at the crack. At higher temperatures, <I>K</I><SUB>&sigma;</SUB> was replaced by Neuber&rsquo;s plastic stress concentration factor <I>K</I><SUB>&sigma;</SUB><SUP>*</SUP>.

In this report, a research has been made concerning the change of the hardness and the crystal growth of Se in accordance with the time of heat treatments by means of the Marten&rsquo;s scratch hardness tester and of the X-ray method, respectively. And we measured the surface tension in the melting state at each temperatures with the dropping method.<BR>As was shown in Fig. 1, the Marten&rsquo;s hardness diminished rapidly in 5 minutes, and then after 20 minutes, it began to increase until 4 hours had elapsed. This tendncy was almost opposite to that of the impact value.<BR>By the X-ray method, we found that, in the first stage of the treatment, the crystal had some preferred orientation (see Fig. 2-a), and the internal strain (Fig. 3-a). And then in the second stage the strain disappeared (Fig. 3-b), the crystals showing a random orientation and a grain growth (Fig. 2-b) as well.<BR>When the Debye-Scherrer&rsquo;s method was applied in the first stage of the treatment, the lattice constant of <I>a</I>-axis expanded and that of <I>c</I>-axis contracted as compared with those in the normal state (see Table 1).<BR>When we measured the surface tension,it satisfied the E&ouml;tvos empirical relation up to 300&deg;, while it decreased rapidly around 320&deg; and then gradually diminished (Fig. 5).

LaNbO<SUB>4</SUB> crystals show three lineal structures associated with domain formation under high-resolution polarizing optical microscope. One has a width of the order of 10 microns and the others are in order of 1 micron wide. The former is a large scale multidomain structure formed by twinning deformation due to monoclinic spontaneous strains below phase transition temperature and the latters are a small scale multidomain structure comming from discommensuration due to incommensurate-commensurate phase transition. Spacings of these multidomain structures are discussed on basis of experimental results and theoretical consideration.
