The authors measured the large intestinal length (colon 1.+rectum 1.) and the caecum length against the small intestinal length in rats of Muridae, calculating their ratios. Mean values of the ratios in each species are shown in the Table below. Large intestine and caecum are relatively long in the grass-feeder such as Cletrionomys andersoni, Anteliomys smithii and Microtus montebelli, and relatively short in seeds-and insect-feeder, Apodemus. And they are the shortest in Mus and Rattus which take the grain and cooked food. It is highly probable that the ratios of these intestinal lengths reflect the differences of the food habit and indicate the systematic significance in the related species.

The results obtained by the present investigation may be summarised as follows: 1) The degree of the development of tuberosity, crest and ridge of the pelvis and hind limb seemed to be correlated with that of fossorial life of some animals. 2) Of all the species examined in the present study, the sexual differences in length and width of pubis and obturator foramen were apparently observed. These differences would be derived from the functional difference of the animals of each sex. 3) The severance of pubic symphysis in female animal was observed in all the species of Microtinae used in the present investigation. While, in Murinae, it was found only in the case of Mus molossinus var. 4) For the explanation on the process of reduction and severance of pubic symphysis, the interpretations given by Chapman (1919) and Rensch (1959) seemed to be most reliable. 5) It is would be assumable that the degree of the difference observed in Murinae represents a general tendency of sexual difference of the pelvis, the degree of the simidifference found in Microtinae could be considered as a specialized one which might be attributed to the phylogenic deviation.

The morphological changes of the pelvis and hind limb of Japanese meadow voles (Microtus montebelli) were observed at various stages of their growth. From the results obtained, following tendencies were revealed: 1) In the early stage of the postnatal growth, morphological difference of pelvis between male and female animals could hardly by observed. 2) The time of the first appearance of the sexual difference at pubic and ischiatic area coincided with the time when the sexual difference in the body weight was first recognized. 3) More extensive growth change was observed in female than in male animals; for instance, the severance of the pubic symphysis was observed only in female at a definite stage which seemed to be related with the pregnancy. 4) The well-developed tuberosity, crest and ridge of some bones in both sexes would be attributed to fossorial life of the vole.
