In this rapidly changing world, art education assessment is a cornerstone of envisioning educational reform. Under such circumstances, it is necessary to clarify the entire structure as well as the core parts of contemporary studies. This paper focuses on the current condition of practical studies on art education evaluation conducted in the United States. It will conduct a systematic review of the academic journals Studies in Art Education and Art Education published by the National Art Education Association (NAEP) from 2002 to 2017. The analysis results clearly showed that art education assessment has many political implications, for example, on accountability, standards movement, and NAEP. Also, with regard to research categories, many studies focused on developing alternative art assessment methods, such as digital portfolios, rubrics, and moderation processes. All these are related to the authentic assessment context.

The purpose of this study is to reconsider arts as an interactive process arising between human and materials. In order to investigate this process, the concept of textility, which was proposed by Tim Ingold, is applied. Ingold's ideas, which are rooted in various sources, was firstly explored. Roland Barthes's art criticism was secondly revealed in order to clarify the creativity produced merely by seeing a work of art as a process. Hiraku Suzuki's art practice featuring drawing to follow various lines found in the environment with his body was thirdly analyzed. As a result, the following suggestions are put forth: Art education should be practiced based on seeing, feeling and inquiring of what a material itself is, and any materials should not to be seen as an object, in order to eliminate the dichotomy between arts and our daily lives.

An art appreciation activity that begins from seeing actual works is developed, accompanied by language activities during school education. In this research, how the appreciation activity should be is considered with attention being focused on the beginning of conversations and images based on a practical study. In that regard, the internal transformation and understanding of others within the viewers were taken up as perspectives important for deepening appreciation and handling the quality of appreciation. The deepening of appreciation is accompanied by an international transformation within the viewers. It is important to pay attention to language expressed through the sensitivity of viewers, not simply language skills. In this point, what is important is the standpoint of cognitive linguistics that places emphasis on the side of sensitive language. Having a perspective from which to grasp the generation of cognitive meanings in relation to creativity is considered to lead to the activation of both art appreciation and language activities.During the art appreciation activity, conversation and communication with various works, oneself and other persons are generated. For the establishment of communication with others, the understanding of others is indispensable. In the second half of this study, the purpose of the art appreciation activity concerning the "understanding" of works is discussed. The skills of looking, listening and sensing generally lead to the rich expression of language. Through the enhancement of art appreciation activities, various skills common to various subjects may be developed.
