Over more than one century since 1894, cymothoid isopods attached by the diclidophorid monogenean Choricotyle elongata (Goto, 1894) in the mouth cavity of Japanese sparids have not been exactly identified. This note reports that those isopods are identifiable as Ceratothoa verrucosa (Schioedte & Meinert, 1883) based on material of the species attached by Ch. elongata in the mouth cavity of a red seabream, Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843), from the Seto Inland Sea.

A new species of swimming crab of the genus Catoptrus A. Milne-Edwards, 1870 (Portunidae) is described from Kagoshima, southern Japan. Catoptrus lavicolus n. sp. was collected from deep inside large lava rocks at shallow subtidal bed of Sakurajima, an active volcano. The new species differs from all seven congeners by a combination of the characters of the carapace, chelipeds and ambulatory legs. Intersex specimens of C. lavicolus n. sp. were observed in this study, while no male specimen has been collected.

We examined the effects of temperature and salinity on larval survival, duration, and growth of three amphidromous atyid shrimps, Caridina leucosticta, C. multidentata, and C. typus to infer larval dispersal strategy in the sea. Larvae were reared under 25 combinations of five different temperature (20, 23, 26, 29, and 32°C) and salinity (4.25, 8.5, 17, 25.5, and 34 ppt) levels. Interspecific variability was detected in larval performance: C. leucosticta larvae were able to survive to moult into the juvenile stage at the lower salinity condition (8.5 ppt), C. multidentata larvae exhibited an ability to adapt to the wide range of salinity condition (17–34 ppt), and C. typus larvae adapted to the higher salinity condition (34 ppt) better than C. leucosticta larvae. Larval duration was less variable between species. Thus, salinity adaptation of larvae may play an important role in mediating the larval dispersal of the three Caridina species in the sea. Larval dispersal range may be most limited near the river mouth for C. leucosticta, and be moderate for C. typus, and C. multidentata larvae may be able to disperse broadly under the high salinity condition of the open sea.

Monthly quadrat sampling of freshwater shrimps infested by the corallanid isopod Tachaea chinensis was conducted in Lake Biwa, central Japan, between April 2014 and September 2015. In total, 3,222 shrimps, including 2,786 Neocaridina spp., 309 Paratya improvisa, and 127 Palaemon paucidens were collected. Individuals of 431 T. chinensis were found from those hosts. The prevalence was 12.2% in Neocaridina spp., 5.5% in P. improvisa, and 24.4% in P. paucidens, respectively. All isopods found on hosts were immature stages and showed an annual emergence pattern; newly hatched juveniles were first sampled in August, increased the body length until May, and were not observed in June–July. To collect T. chinensis apart from the hosts, a cage trap filled with reed roots was put on the study site between June 2014 and September 2015. Isopods were collected in July and September. Specimens trapped in 2015 consisted of adult or premature individuals, and 39 out of 46 adult females collected were ovigerous. During an observation using snorkeling in July 2014, 29 adults were observed under stones and in withered Phragmites australis roots. Thus, T. chinensis reproduces in benthic habitats during summer. Subsequently, juveniles appear and grow via a series of molts on the hosts until the following year.

Holophryxus fusiformis Shiino, 1937, a species of dajid isopod that attaches to the carapace of sakura shrimp, Lucensosergia lucens (Hansen, 1922), is reported from the sea of Taiwan for the first time. This species was first described as infesting Prehensilosergia prehensilis (Bate, 1881) from Kanbara, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The current finding represents the second occurrence of H. fusiformis and identifies a new host. Approximately 1% of the sakura shrimps in Yilan, Taiwan are infected by H. fusiformis. Holophryxus fusiformis has been found offshore from both Yilan, Taiwan and Nagasaki and in Suruga Bay, Japan; thus, the distribution of the parasite possibly follows the Kuroshio Current. When large quantities of parasites occur in the sea of Taiwan, the parasites are likely to flow into the Japanese waters along with the Kuroshio Current, subsequently influencing the production of the Japanese sakura shrimps. The establishment of a monitoring program for infection of the dajid in sakura shrimps between Taiwan and Japan is recommended. This study provides additional information on this species, including a new host, distribution, redescription, infection rate, and morphological variation.

Manning, Raymond B. Stomatopod Crustacea of Vietnam: the Legacy of Raoul Serene. Crustacean Research, The Carcinological Society of Japan. Special Number 4, 339 pages, 142 figures, 38 colored plates, 1995. Over a period of almost three decades, the late French carcinologist Raoul Serene accumulated collections of stomatopods from shore habitats of southern Vietnam. This report is based on part of the collection, his draft manuscript, figures, and colored plates. Seventy two species of stomatopods are known from the waters of Vietnam, and forty six of these are represented in Serene's collection. Based on this material, diagnoses of and keys to all families and genera of stomatopods from the Indo-West Pacific are presented. Keys to all Indo-West Pacific species for genera represented in Vietnamese waters are included. Four new families are recognized, Heterosquillidae, Indosquillidae, Parasquillidae, and Takuidae. Eighteen new genera are recognized (their type species in parentheses): Gonodactylaceus (Gonodactylus glabrous var. ternatensis De Man, 1902), Gonodactylellus (Gonodactylus chiragra var. affinis De Man, 1902), Gonodactylinus (Gonodactylus chiragra var. viridis Serene, 1954), and Neogonodactylus (Gonodactylus oerstedii Hansen, 1895) in the Gonodactylidae; Raoulius (Gonodactylus cultrifer White, 1850) in the Odontodactylidae; Baoulserenea (Pseudosquilla ornata Miers, 1880) in the Pseudosquillidae); Taku (Gonodactylus spinosocarinatus Fukuda, 1909) in the Takuidae; Kasim (Heterosquilloides philippilLensis Moosa, 1986) in the Heterosquillidae; Lysiosquillina (Squilla maculata Fabricius, 1793) in the Lysiosquillidae; Cloridina (Squilla microphthalma H. Milne Edwards, 1837), Erugosquilla (Squilla massavensis Kossmann, 1880), Fallosquilla (Squilla fallax Bouvier, 1914), Keijia (Squilla lirata Kemp & Chopra, 1921), Miyakea (Squilla nepa Latreille, 1828), Neclorida (Clorida miersi Manning, 1968), Oratosquillina (Squilla interrupta Kemp, 1911), Pontiosquilla (Squilla mauiana Bigelow, 1931), and Toshimitsu (Squilla tiwarii Blumstein, 1974), in the Squillidae. Two new species, Gonodactylaceus gravieri and Lophosquilla makarovi, are described. A checklist of the stomatopods of the Indo-West Pacific is provided. Colored figures of 28 species are included based on hand-painted figures prepared under Serene's direction. Serene's observations on biology, morphology, and habitat are summarized for each species included in his collections.

An ovigerous female of the cymothoid isopod Nerocila trichiura (Miers, 1877) was collected from the isthmus of Cheilopogon doederleinii (Steindachner, 1887) (Beloniformes: Exocoetidae), in Kowaura Bay, Mie Prefecture, central Japan. This represents the third record of N. trichiura from the western Pacific Ocean, and C. doederleinii is a new host of the isopod. A skin wound caused by the isopod was found at attachment site.

The sale of crayfish in the pet trade has increased in recent decades, and a substantial fraction of the world's entire range of crayfish species is available in the pet trade. The market for pet crayfish creates two major concerns: the potential for over exploitation of natural populations of crayfish to supply the pet trade, and the negative consequences resulting from the release of non-indigenous crayfish into natural habitats. The chain from the source of crayfish to the final owner can be lengthy, and each step in the supply chain needs to be studied by different methods. While there are often regulations intended to limit the trade of crayfish as pets, they differ widely from place to place and seem to have limited success in changing the behaviour of owners of pet crayfish.

Freshwater crabs of the genus Geothelphusa Stimpson, 1858 were collected from a river on Oshima Peninsula, Hokkaido, northern Japan. They were identified as Geothelphusa dehaani (White, 1847) based mainly on structures of the carapace and the male first gonopods. In the study river, G. dehaani occurred in the upper reach of the main stream and in several tributaries but was not found in the middle reach. The presence of brooding females and many immature individuals suggests that the G. dehaani population is established in the river.

A new species of Bathyceradocus, one of the maerid amphipods, is described based on the specimens collected from sunken wood on the bottom of the Kumano-nada, central Japan. Bathyceradocus japonicus sp. nov. can be distinguished from its congeners by the number of the accessory spines on the pleonite 1, the number of articles on the accessory flagellum, and the strongly oblique palm of the gnathopod 2 with the dentate margin. A brief note on the behavior of the new species and a key to species of the genus are provided.

A hemiarthrine bopyrid, Quadripediphryxus mayuzumii gen. et sp. nov. (Isopoda: Epicaridea: Bopyridae), is described based on a pair of specimens infesting the ventral surface of the abdomen of a snapping shrimp, Synalpheus streptodactylus Coutière, 1905 (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheidae). The shrimp was collected from ornamental coral rock of an unidentified species of Poritidae (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) from Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The female of the new genus is similar to those in the genera Hemiphryxus Bruce, 1978, Eriphrixus Markham, 1990, and Micropodiphryxus Boyko, 2012, in having seven and four pereopods on the concave and convex sides of the body, respectively. However, female of the new genus can be distinguished from those in the other genera by the presence of a tiny triangular pleotelson bearing uropods. This finding represents the 12th species of hemiarthrine bopyrids found infesting the abdomen of caridean shrimps recorded from Japan.

Anilocra prionuri Williams & Bunkley-Williams, 1986, is reported based on a female specimen collected from the skin below the nostril of a scalpel sawtail, Prionurus scalprum Valenciennes, 1835, in the southern East China Sea off Kuchinoerabu-jima Island, one of the northern Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan. Anilocra prionuri was previously reported only from off the Pacific coast of central Hon­shu, Japan, but the present collection extends the geographical distribution range of the species from central Honshu southwest to the northern Ryukyu Islands and represents its first record from the East China Sea. The fish had a wound with heavily damaged epidermis at the attachment site of A. prionuri. It was a rare parasite of P. scalprum at the collection site.

This study investigated size at sexual maturity of the male sergestid shrimp Lucensosergia lucens (“Sakura-ebi” in Japanese). The shrimps were captured in the inner part of Suruga Bay, Japan in August 2013 using experimental trawls. Carapace length (CL), body length (BL), development of petasma, and presence of spermatophores in the terminal ampoule were documented. Probabilities of maturity as a function of CL were modeled using general linear models with a binomial and logit link function and predicted the CL at which 50% of individuals were mature (CL50). Morphologically mature males had a petasma connected with the pars astringens, and the basal part of the pars media was developed. In physiologically mature males, chambers in terminal ampoules were filled with spermatophores, including spermatozoa and appendages. CL50 (mm) was estimated to be 8.87 (=27.86 mm BL) and 7.84 (=24.65 mm BL) based on the morphological and physiological criteria, respectively. It is believed that most of the age-0 males attain sexual maturity within the first year and mature males are exploited in the autumn fishing season (October–December).

The cymothoid isopod Nerocila phaiopleura Bleeker, 1857 is a skin parasite of actinopterygian fishes in the Indo-West Pacific. The isopod is reported from three species of fishes, viz., Japanese barracuda, Sphyraena japonica Bloch & Schneider, 1801 (Sphyraenidae), Japanese jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus (Temminck & Schlegel, 1844) (Carangidae), and round herring, Etrumeus micropus (Temminck & Schlegel, 1846) (Dussumieriidae), in coastal waters of the northwest Pacific Ocean off Mie Prefecture, central Japan. These three fish species represent new host records for N. phaiopleura. Based on the literature published between 1857 and 2017, 44 nominal and some unidentified species in four orders and 14 families of fishes have been reported as the hosts of N. phaiopleura, and 18 nominal species of them belong to two clupeiform families (10 spp. in Clupeidae and 8 spp. in Engraulidae). This indicates that N. phaiopleura utilizes a wide variety of fish species as its hosts but prefers the fishes of the two families. The infected fish examined in this study had a large skin wound caused by N. phaiopleura.

During 2019, two specimens belonging to a new species of the alpheid shrimp genus Automate De Man, 1888 were collected from two islands in the northern part of the Persian Gulf. The new species is a member of the A. hayashii group which hitherto only comprised two species. However, the new species A. arturi can be separated from them by several morphological features: a shorter rostrum with rounded tip, a shorter stylocerite barely extending beyond the first antennular article, the scaphocerite not reaching to the end of the second antennular article, the third maxilliped coxa with a subtriangular-shaped lateral plate, the ischia of the first pereiopods (chelipeds) dorsally armed with spiniform setae and ventrally with a small tubercle, and the ischia of the walking pereiopods armed with a single ventrolateral spiniform seta.

The distribution of the invasive freshwater shrimp, Neocaridina davidi, in a spring-fed stream at Kunitachi, Tokyo, Japan, was investigated in relation to the stream’s environmental parameters. Compared to previous studies, the population density of N. davidi was found to be remarkably high (up to 315 ind./m2). The increase in population density is likely because the water temperature in the spring-fed stream remains 17–20°C in the winter, prolonging the period during which the shrimps can spawn. Generalized linear mixed models showed that adult shrimps were more abundant in areas with high emergent plant coverage. In contrast, juveniles were more abundant in areas with low current velocity. These results provide essential clues to the interspecific relationships between N. davidi and native spring organisms that inhabit the same physical environments.

An ovigerous female of Lernaeenicus ramosus Kirtisinghe, 1956 was collected from an areolate grouper, Epinephelus areolatus (Forsskål, 1775), in coastal waters of Suruga Bay (western North Pacific Ocean), Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan. This represents a new host and the easternmost distribution records for L. ramosus. Based on the literature published between 1956 and 2019, this paper tabulates the known hosts and distribution records of the species in the Indo-West Pacific region. The recent collections of L. ramosus from Japan further support a previous suggestion that the geographical distribution of the species in Japanese waters is affected by two warm currents, the Kuroshio, and its branch, the Tsushima Current.

Tropical shallow-water crinoids offer shelter to a diversity of marine life, including various symbiotic palaemonid shrimp species. In this study, the reproductive features of the shrimps Cristimenes commensalis and Pontoniopsis comanthi inhabiting comatulid crinoids are studied and compared. Ovigerous females were collected from the crinoids Anneissia bennetti and Comaster nobilis from Iriomote-jima, Japan. All specimens were examined for the following traits: carapace length, fecundity, embryo volume, brood mass volume and dry weight of the females and the eggs. Cristimenes commensalis produced 15–117 eggs with a volume of 0.04 mm3±0.00, whereas the smaller-sized species P. comanthi produced 12–57 eggs with a volume of 0.02 mm3±0.01. The reproductive output (RO) of C. commensalis was 0.16±0.03, considerably lower than that of P. comanthi at 0.31±0.05. Data is beginning to emerge on the fecundity and reproductive output of symbiotic palaemonid shrimps, although comparisons remain hampered by the general lack of knowledge on their biology in general. Pontoniopsis comanthi has the highest recorded reproductive output so far, despite being the smallest species studied. Our results confirm that inhabiting a sheltered habitat allows symbiotic shrimps to allocate more energy to embryo production than free-living species. Different reproductive strategies are, however, apparent for these species inhabiting the same host species, implying the existence of differential selective forces.

A new species of Hexapinus (Hexapodidae) is described from Hatoma Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Hexapinus patuma, new species, is morphologically close to H. latus Rahayu & Ng, 2014, but can be distinguished by the structures of the carapace and third maxilliped, as well as the degree of setation of ambulatory legs.
