The chemistry of the coordination polymers has in recent years advanced extensively, affording various architectures, which are constructed from a variety of molecular building blocks with different interactions between them. The next challenge is the chemical and physical functionalization of these architectures, through the porous properties of the frameworks. The author first synthesized a novel porous material relevant to methane storage and developed the functions not only as gas storage but also separation with the capacity higher than conventional materials. He has attained (1)the first observation of detached oxygen molecule in solid, 1D ladder structure aligned to the host channel, which gives a better understanding of adsorption phenomena in nano-channel and then, lead to a novel nano-technology, (2) extremely high levels of selective sorption of acetylene molecules as compared to a very similar molecule, carbon dioxide, onto the functionalized surface of a porous coordination polymers, and (3) flexible crystalline porous frameworks having a specific gate-opening pressure for super critical gases at ambient temperature, which will find applications in gas separation and sensors. The hallmark of work accomplished by the author is innovation of porous materials for storage and separation, establishing its chemistry for in-depth understanding of sorption phenomena and introducing a new concept, flexible framework, which provide unique functions.
