In ancient Japan, steelmaking was practiced nationwide, but in the Middle Ages, steelmaking was carried out only in areas around Okuizumo, and steelmaking elsewhere declined. Kamakura was one of the areas that declined, but we reproduced ancient steelmaking using Kamakura iron sand as a raw material, and searched for a method to estimate the place of production of the iron that was used as the raw material for ancient generated iron.

Effects of car coating treatment on resistance to environmental corrosion and on cracks formed by collision were studied by microscopical, spectroscopical and mechanical methods. Treated and untreated samples aged for three years were used to examine the surface brightness, the water repellency and the crack appearance. From the results, it was verified that this excellent coating material mainly consists of silicone polymer and the treated car-body surface has resistance to corrosion and superelasticity.

Environmental impact by recycling paper package for milk products (milk pack) was estimated using environmental I/O table in Japan. Present state of recycling technology and materials flow was also investigated. Production of 7.66×105ton toilette paper (1997 in Japan) was considered using recycled 2.001×105ton of milk pack (1997 in Japan) in function of recycle rate. In case of using PE coating film on milk packs for thermal energy in recycle process the impact becomes reduced with increasing recycle rate of milk packages.

A transverse RF discharge excited carbon dioxide slab laser has been operated cw with hybrid unstable resonator. An output power is 130W at 6.5% efficiency with a frequency of 125MHz and 35Torr of gas mixture 1:1:3 (CO2:N2:He). In this condition, the small-signal gain is measured at 0.82% cm-1.

A dialytic battery (DB) with ion-exchange membranes can convert the mixing free energy into the electric energy. The purpose of this paper is in seeing the deterioration of the performance by use of long time of an ion exchange film. Maximum electric power became about 1/10 in carbon electrode by the use of intermittence which lasted for eight years.

The main objective of this lecture is to present a background understanding for the current endeavor to change the course of the humanospheric evolution. In order for every human being to lead a happy life, physical conditions such as adequate supply of fresh water and foods, no shortage of materials that are essential for our modern living, sufficient control over poisons and diseases that infect us and our environments, and securing enough energy sources that last forever are prerequisite. Obviously, we need to develop new technologies, new societal systems, and new lifestyles to achieve these. However, it should be emphatically stressed that these conditions and the three new subjects (technology, social system, and lifestyle) are only desirable as far as they make it possible to provide everybody with a happy life. The evolution of global material cycles, current status of material and energy exchange between the biosphere and the humanosphere, and four rules of ecology are discussed in this context. On the analogy of human relationship between young and olds, the reduction of the exchange between young humanosphere and old global life support system is proposed to be the most urgent target.

A novel chemo-mechanical pressure control system for pumping applications was constructed and tested. The pressure control system utilizes direct conversion of chemical energy to mechanical energy by enzymatic reactions. In order to construct the system, glucose oxidase (GOD) and catalase (CAT) were immobilized onto a dialysis membrane with photosensitive resin. The enzyme immobilized membrane was functioned as a diaphragm of a reaction unit. Therefor, the reaction unit was divided into a top cell (gas phase) and a bottom cell (liquid phase). Characterization of the pressure control system was carried out by supplying hydrogen peroxide and glucose solution into the liquid cell, respectively. As a result, active pressure iincrease in the top cell induced by oxygen production due to decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and pressure decrease induced by oxygen consumption of GOD reaction. Thus, the pressure in the cell was successfully controlled by chemical energy. The possible application of the pressure controle system is a diaphragm pump which is driven with active pressure change.

KSP Inc. was established in 1986 as the core entity of the Kanagawa Science Park as a result of a project designed to realize the “Brain Center Framework” policy of Kanagawa Prefecture, and as the aim of Kawasaki City to become a mecca for science, technology, and research and development in Japan and Asia. KSP Inc. carries out the comprehensive management of the Kanagawa Science Park. Incubation managers of KSP assist the tenants of Kanagawa Science Park and other startups for business outside the park. In addition, KSP supports training of entrepreneurs and the commercialization of technical seeds by signing MOUs with various universities for concerning cooperation. Also we have “KSP Business Innovation School (KSP BIS)” for developing entrepreneurs for businesspersons for 28 years. More than 650 people graduated from the KSP BIS. The core concept of this school’s curriculum is the “How a business plan should be written?” One can experience real-time open innovations and join business networking in various industries, aiming at development of entrepreneurship.

Micro air vehicle (MAV) is highly focused by many researchers because the MAV can investigate the condition of disaster site and accident site that is difficult to investigate for human being. Usually, design of the aircraft wing is inspired by birds and flying insects. Resently, dragonfly is a good research target because the dragonfly has high flight performances and high robustness. In order to develop the MAV that is inspired by the dragonfly, it is important to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of micro structures on the dragonfly’s wing. The cross section of the dragonfly’s wing is corrugated. The effect of the corrugated shape is already investigated and applied to windmills for weak wind. On the other hand, the effect of micro spikes on the dragonfly’s wing is not investigated in spite that the number of the spikes are more than three thusands. So, we focus on the micro spikes on the wing vein of dragonfly. Firstly, we prepared the handmade artificial wings with micro spikes. The fabricated artificial wing had 150 micro spikes whose length wass 600~700 μm. We investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of the micro spikes on these artificial wings. Some merits of micro spikes were observed in spite that the length and the number of spikes were different from those of the natural wing. So, we challenged to fabricate highly realistic artificial wing and investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing. A metal mold with micro holes was fabricated by the electrical discharge machining (EDM) process. Melted chitosan was applied on the mold and spread into the hole of the mold. After the solidification of chitosan, artificial wing with 400 micro spikes was fabricated. These wings had 400 micro spikes whose height is 100 μm.

We are studying the neutron production regime in IECF (inertial electrostatic confinement fusion) device. Fusion reactions are mainly occurred both beam-background and fast neutral-background reaction in IECF device. The cross section of D-D reaction increases with incident deuteron’s energy. If the reaction occurs only from beam-background channel, generated neutrons will dominate near the cathode. Two 3He proportional counters which are in lengthwise and lateral positions were used to measure neutron counts. The results showed neutrons were produced via not only beam-background channel but also fast neutral-background channel.

In this study, the ammonia gas adsorptivity was evaluated by carbide of coffee beans residue. Ammonia gas was used as a test gas. When organic compounds included some nitrogen atoms are rotted, ammonia gas breaks out. It has irritating smell. And, it shows corrosion effect for metal plating, copper and aluminum. 10 to 1000ppm ammonia gas concentrations were prepared in globe bags with the carbide samples. After 15min, 1h and 24h gas concentration in each glove bags were measured by gas detector tubes. The carbide samples of the coffee bean residue showed excellent ammonia gas adsorptivity.
