In this study the significance and situation of 13 Textbook and Curriculum Libraries in Japan, which were opened in 1947 with many U.S.gift textbooks and reference books for teachers, was cleared from a position of home economics education.The main method of research was to use the documentary records of Japan which were in possession of the libraries of Kagawa University and Hiroshima University and the records of U.S.A., partly as an investigation of the actually perused U.S.home economics education books.The purpose of this first report was to grasp the outline of the library and the design and background of its establishment.The results were as follows: 1.In the summer of 1947, American Education Libraries which were located in 13 educational institutions throughout Japan were poened with 337 U.S.gift books.Later, their names were changed to Textbook and Curriculum Libraries and were increased further with Japanese books. 2.The American Education Library was brought to Ministry of Education from the U.S.War Department as a part of the educational policy for Occupied Areas.The design of the library was to expedite the step of revamping textual materials which was the main part toward a democratic education. 3.The War Department Textbook Committee selected the gift textbooks based on a standard criteria.In those books, five kinds of homemaking textbooks for high schools were included and four of them were sent to Japan.
