Pycnodonte (Pycnodonte) taniguchii Hayami & Kase, 1992, has been regarded as an example of "living fossils", because of the characteristic conservative morphology and cryptic habitat. After the original description, this oyster was found alive also at many cavernicolous sites of the following islands in the western Pacific and eastern part of the Indian : Ryukyu (Miyako, Okinawa and Yonaguni), Bonin, Palau, Philippines (Luzon, Cebu, Bohol), Malaysia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga and Thailand (near Phuket).
