The present report described the general biology concerning the apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata. It contains following items : 1) Mass culture methods with water tanks, 2) Feeding habits, 3) Nutrition problems, 4) Structures of the mouth-parts including the jaw-teeth and the radula, 5) Discriminating methods between female and female, 6) Reproductive systems in male and female, 7) Copulation and egg-laying, 8) Imposex phenomenon by organotin, 9) The central nervous system and 10) The hormonal system including the gonads and the hepatopancreas on reproduction.

During a recent inventory of cephalopod collection in the University Museum, the University of Tokyo, considerable number of specimens came to light that were collected in the early days of the Institute of Zoology, Tokyo Imperial University, and duning the establishment Misaki Marine Biological Laboratory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Names recorded on the labels include those of famous scholars such as Isao Iijima, Kakichi Mitsukuri, Madoka Sasaki, along with that of the master collector Kumakichi Aoki. The collection was confirmed to containe the holotypes and syntypes of 19 taxa described by Sasaki and the holotype of Opisthoteuthis depressa Iijima & Ikeda.

以前からそういう話を聞いてはいたが,先頃茨城県にある「あ印」というタコの加工会社に招かれて工場を見学させて貰ったところ,タコが大量の貝を「採集」して来ることを実見した。過去にどこかに誰かが,同様の情報を書いているのではないかと探してみたところ,築地の中央魚類(株)にお勤めの会員石川謙二氏から氏がタコが採って来る貝について1986年春相模貝類同好会でご発表になり,同年,雑誌「アニマ」夏休み特大号に写真付きの記事を掲載されたとご教示を戴いた。その上,同氏から1996年2月23日に同好会に配布された「アフリカのタコが携帯してくる貝」という資料(本稿付録に掲載)も戴いた。いっぽう,岡本正豊氏からは「週間文春」1981年4月16日号に掲載された「タコのおみやげ」というカラーグラビアのコピーをご提供戴いた。この記事には明石市の冷凍たこの解凍場に勤務する伊藤明夫氏という人が集めた貝の写真が付いている。このような週刊誌の貝類関係記事を保管しておられる岡本氏のマメさにも感服したが,同好会や学会のマニア以外にも伊藤氏のような隠れた貝類収集家がいるのも驚きであった。石川氏の業績や「週間文春」の記事に比べれば,今回のコレクションは僅か1回きりのしかも短時間の採集努力に留まったが,筆者としては初めての体験でおおいに興味をそそられたので,小文とした。

Video images of a very large squid (ML 1m<) were taken by the ROV Hyper-Dolphin at a depth of 1161m near the bottom of Sagami Bay in March, 2004. It was tentatively identified as Gonatopsis sp. (Gonatidae), and may represent an undescribed species. It is surprising that the existence of such a large squid in Sagami Bay has not been recorded to date, despite a tremendous amount of sampling and fishing.

ヒレギレイカCtencpteryx siculus (Verany,1851)は沖合性で稀にしか採集されない小型のイカである。鰭があたかも魚類の鰭のように軟条で支えられているように見える風変わりなイカで,固定標本を見ると大抵軟条間の薄膜は切れぎれになっているところからヒレギレイカ(瀧巌)の和名がある。筆者の一人(D.L.)は昨年3月,房総半島鴨川沖で,スーパーハープ・ハイビジョンビデオカメラを搭載した無人探査機ハイパードルフィンによって,世界ではじめて本種の遊泳する姿を観察・撮影した。映像に撮られた証拠標本はハイパードルフィン装備のスラープ・ガン(吸引式採集器)により採集した。

Terebralia palustris (Linne, 1767) has hitherto been known only by dead shells excavated from shell midden of ancient remains before 2000 to 6000 years in Okinawa-jima Island. Living specimen has never known up to this date. Unexpectedly, I collected a single living specimen of this species from mangal of Takazato River, northwestern coast of Okinawa-jima. Is this a transplantation from elsewhere or descendant from ancient stock?
