英語の句動詞は,動詞と不変化詞が共起して,新しい意味をもつ複合動詞の一部である。句動詞では構成要素である動詞と不変化詞との意味の融合がおこり,新しい意味は各要素の本来の意味から予測可能なものから,予測困難な意味をもつものまで多様である。また,句動詞の多くは多義性をもつ。本論文では,動詞と不変化詞の融合の程度差が意味形成,意味理解に積極的な役割を果たしていること,不変化詞が意味形成に重要な役割を果たしていることを明らかにする。スキーマ的な動きを表す動詞に方向性を示す不変化詞が加わることで,意味の融合が起こりやすく,意味の拡張も行なわれやすいことを示す。また,相当する一語動詞と,その使用場面の比較を通して,句動詞表現が存在する理由を求める。動詞と不変化詞の起源,音韻的特質をも考察に入れると,句動詞は二語から成るが,決して不経済な表現ではなく,ゲルマン的な生き生きとした表現であることを明らかにする。The aim of this paper is to clarify the way to form the meaning of phrasal verbs. The so-called English phrasal verbs belong to multi-word verbs whose constituents are verbs and particles, and function as single verbs in sentences. Verb and particle coalesce to form a semantic unit in which the basic meaning of verbs and particles are coerced by a metaphorical meaning of verbs. The meanings of phrasal verbs are different, from the one we can predict easily to the one we cannot. The degree of coerciveness differs in individual phrasal verbs, which makes the phrasal verbs polysemous. The verbs used in phrasal verbs are action verbs and express simple, schematic actions. And the particles indicate the movement of the action. The combination of these makes them easy to form a new meaning. Most of the verbs and the particles are one-syllable words and that makes them to be pronounced like single words by liaison. Comparing with corresponding one word synonyms, we can know phrasal verbs
