The aim of this paper is to elucidate the relation of "reason" and "passion" in Hume's philosophy by examining his interpretation of the alleged "the combat of passion and reason" as conflict between "violent passions" and "calm passions". Firstly, we point out that the combat takes place only in some kinds of actions. Secondly, we examine Hume's position by interpreting his famous statement "Reason is the slave of passions". We find that Hume oversimplifies the relation between reason and passion and particularly he misconceives how reason could influence passions. We conclude that Hume's argument can and should be rebuilt by reconsidering the relation between reason and passion in human conduct.
